Welcome to the Ottawa edition of the MyBindi newsletter
!

We're totally excited to announce that His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be in Ottawa in just a few weeks!  MyBindi is so honoured to be a media partner for this amazing event.  I was lucky enough to see him when he was in Toronto in 2010 and it was such an inspiring evening.  I hope you will all take advantage of his visit and attend in large numbers.

There are a number of other events on the horizon as Ottawa readies itself to serve its South Asian communities.  From Pakistan's Republic Day celebrations to Bollywood workshops, we're thrilled to see the South Asian community grow and thrive and celebrate its heritage in our capital city.

Please forward this newsletter to your family and friends and encourage them to join in the events with you!

If you are a business or an organization in Ottawa that would like to do outreach with the South Asian community in Ottawa, please send me an email at syerah@mybindi.com.  I would love to hear from you.

From all of us at MyBindi.com, we wish you a very happy and prosperous 2012.

Regards,

Syerah

Everything Was Good-bye by Gurjinder Basran
Everything was Goodbye 390
Meena is the youngest of six daughters. Her dad died when she was small, leaving her mom to raise her and her sisters on her own. As a high school student, she begins to relish her independence, but finds it difficult to balance her family's traditional views with her desire to fit in with her peers.

And as she grows up, that duality is only amplified, as she's pressured into an arranged marriage and must again weigh her own feelings against those of others.

Meena is the main character in Gurjinder Basran's premiere novel, Everything Was Good-bye.

While the story is not an autobiography, the author says it's definitely "informed" by her experiences and observations.

It was when she realized her personal journalling and desire to reconcile her childhood experiences was turning to something quite fictional and different from her own life that she decided to write a novel.
