My Granny the Goldfish by Anosh Irani
My Granny the GoldfishThe Toronto premiere of the hilarious and irreverent comedy

by Anosh Irani
directed by Rosemary Dunsmore
starring Kawa Ada, Yolande Bavan, Veena Sood & Sanjay Talwar

Canadians love to laugh at ourselves and Anosh Irani's My Granny the Goldfish, the hilarious, irreverent and warm-hearted comedy set in Vancouver and Bombay about three generations of a family, is a great opportunity to laugh out loud! The play joyfully deals with issues of life and death, racism and intolerance as well as, ultimately, forgiveness and acceptance.

Granny travels from Bombay to visit her beloved 25 year-old grandson Nico who is in hospital in Vancouver. Her "cure alls" are attitudes, platitudes and a full flask of whiskey. Despite Nico's neurotic and hysterical protests, Granny helps him truly heal - ultimately proving that laughter is the best medicine.

"... a perfect cross between a burlesque dancer and a Bengal tiger - my granny."- Nico

"... side-splittingly funny ..."- Vancouver Review

Mind Mantra

 Eye Contact

When you are talking to someone, make direct eye contact.  In the Indian culture, we are discouraged from looking at some one directly, especially older persons. It is perceived as a sign of disrespect.   Even more so, if you are challenging something that is being said.  Think back to when you were a child. At some point, during a reprimand, you would have been told to "look down" or "don't stare at me." Or perhaps, as a parent, you have said that to your child.

  Purpose...Your Final Answer

This week I've been thinking about Purpose. With a capital P. For many of us, we ponder the big question: 'What is my Purpose in Life?' - For some, they know what that Purpose is - and are fulfilling it by living their passions - be it via employment/career, hobbies and/or choices they make everyday.

However, for many of us - the elusive idea of 'Life Purpose' seems greater than Life itself sometimes! Its almost as if there is this tacit pressure for all of us to 'figure it out' before our time is up... really, its sort of grim when you think about it.

So today I wanted to blog about Purpose - in a more broad and general way. Not in an inspirational 'Find your destiny, Follow you dreams' kind of way - and while that is great and meaningful, I'm talking about good ol' fashioned Purpose.

What do I mean by that? Well, I've learned a lot about Purpose in my sabbatical year in NYC with really 'No Purpose'. Because I cannot work due to Visa restrictions, I've had the luxury (and am forever grateful) to have had a year to do 'whatever I want'. Now that may seem like a dream come true to most of us (and it was in many ways, don't get me wrong), but there is something to be said about Purpose. Sure its great in the beginning - the freedom, the time, the exploration, the adventure - absolutely 100% amazing. However, after a while, what I think all of us crave is that sense of meaning/doing something that matters/Purpose.

4 Tips for Gracious Living

Grace is that subtle, powerful force that compels loving action and compassionate communication.  Last night, I met with a television journalist who asked me for my top tips for successful living.  Before answering, I sampled the wisdom of my colleagues, 4 Yoga Therapists with vision and purpose.

Here is the short list of what we came up with:

 1. Before you speak, stop, look and listen.

Not every thought you think is true or needs to be spoken out loud.  Listen generously to the other person or situation first - you will have all the cues you need to uplift the situation.

2. Take one deep conscious breath on the hour every hour.

This is a ten second meditation.  It is a way to create the practice of being present and aware throughout your entire day.  Best to start this practice now - before you need it, before a criss comes up.  Build the habit into your routine so that you can draw on this strength and power at any point in your day or life.  It is always there for you.

Everything Was Good-bye by Gurjinder Basran

Meena is the youngest of six daughters. Her dad died when she was small, leaving her mom to raise her and her sisters on her own. As a high school student, she begins to relish her independence, but finds it difficult to balance her family's traditional views with her desire to fit in with her peers.

And as she grows up, that duality is only amplified, as she's pressured into an arranged marriage and must again weigh her own feelings against those of others.

Meena is the main character in Gurjinder Basran's premiere novel, Everything Was Good-bye.

While the story is not an autobiography, the author says it's definitely "informed" by her experiences and observations.

It was when she realized her personal journalling and desire to reconcile her childhood experiences was turning to something quite fictional and different from her own life that she decided to write a novel.

"I really liked it. That was when I knew 'okay, maybe you're a writer...' "

As an Indo-Canadian girl growing up in North Delta, Basran, now a 38-year-old married mother of two boys, remembers being very much a minority in her community.

Savia Music

"The Gunsmith & MoHit" is an up-and-coming South Asian hip-hop band hailing from Toronto who have just released their debut album "Conquest".

"The Gunsmith & MoHit's" mission statement is simple: bring a stirring, fresh, inventive flavour of hip-hop to the People. They have just released their debut album titled "Conquest", which has undoubtedly made their presence felt. The beats are hard-hitting, and the melodies catchy. Their songs fill a void that has existed for far too long in the urban music scene. The dramatic sounds, accompanied by The Gunsmith's highly technical rap vocals, and MoHit's incredible choruses is sure to sweep the masses off their feet.

Bollywood Bites
Why Vidya Balan's Kahaani should be a success?

Actress Vidya Balan, who is the current reigning queen of the tinsel town, has proved her calibre with her remarkable show of talent in back to back films. Parineeta, Paa, No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture have fetched instant fame to the actress. Vidya's upcoming and much-awaited flick Kahaani is yet again a challenge for her.

1) Bollywood has realised the true meaning of women's power, as females are no more portrayed as weak and submissive in films. Today's women are more realistic, vibrant and unconventional. Similarly, after setting the Box Office on fire with her stupendous performance in The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan is yet again heading towards success with her another female-centric film Kahaani.
