Last One Out Of The
Comfort Zone,
Please Turn Out The Lights

Greetings!

Deepak Chopra tells a story
about flies in a jar and how,
if you put flies in a jar and then take the lid off after a certain length of time, only one or two pioneering flies will make their way
out of the jar.
flies

Harvard professor Ellen Langer calls this premature cognitive commitment,
in this case a premature commitment
to being trapped in a jar.
Or in my workout world,
welcome to the cozy couch of the comfort zone.

Another example would be if you have a fish tank and separated the tank with a glass wall down the middle and put two schools of fish in the tank.
After a while, if you took out the wall between the two schools of fish,
only a few fish would ever swim into the territory of the other school.
As humans, we often find ourselves responding this same way.
We have experiences as children or young adults that create jar lids or glass walls
that don't have to be there
and we keep responding as if those barriers are still there even when they are gone.
The well worn grooves in our brains make it difficult to push
or to strive
or to challenge ourselves
beyond what we are familiar with.
We don't even think of it as trapped.
We don't even really think,
we just don't consider our options
on the other side of the fish tank.
And I see this imaginary wall in fitness all the time.
People, especially women,
need to be pushed (or to push themselves)
until they realize that they don't have to respond
to the wall.
Does your father's voice echo in your head about your big behind? Do you find yourself channeling your mother when you refer to your big bones and sluggish metabolism?
These are limiting ways of thinking as bad as a jar lid.

If so, it's time to change. Examine when you are coasting, workout-wise and try to give yourself a push. If you can't make yourself do it,
hire a trainer.
Or get a coach. Or join a team or club.
You can also get a workout buddy,
maybe someone slightly faster or fitter than you.

Just as I suggested last week,
I recommend having a fitness plan, the more detailed the better. It's still February. The perfect time for you to strive a bit more.
So that, come spring, you'll be more interested in flying out into the real world
rather than staying in that jar.

The idea hits me this week like a skillet in the face. I need my battery recharged.
Spas used to be a struggle for me.
Why? Well, for starters, I can barely get a pedicure without feeling contemptible for asserting my sweaty size elevens upon some poor soul for fifteen minutes.

God forbid someone sees me sitting there paying someone to scrub my feet.I'm likely to slither right into the water basin rather than be seen indulging this way.
And when  Saint Vicky, the cleaning lady who rescues me from my house twice a month arrives, I absolutely HAVE to either leave the premises or HIDE, being mortified at not cleaning up my own mess, like my mother always tried to teach me.
But I am flying out of the jar, so to speak.
I am organizing another group trip to tgorgeous
 Canyon Ranch in Lenox Massachsetts.
The weekend getway is May 1st-4th ,Thursday through Sunday.
