Help Area Students Prepare for Success!

About 25 percent of Hamilton County public school students live at or below poverty level. That means many area students lack the supplies they need to go back to school to prepare for success.

So United Way of Greater Chattanooga invites you to donate to the third annual STUFF THE BUS school supply drive for children and teens to equip Hamilton County public school students for success in school. The 2012 goal is to collect $40,000 in school supplies.

United Way and the Hamilton County PTA's Teacher Supply Depot are asking people to host school supply drives at their businesses, schools, and places of worship, or just donate school supplies at a participating drop-off event or location. Go online at www.LiveUnitedChattanooga.org to download posters, supply lists and other items to organize a drive.

The list of Stuff the Bus partners has grown. Joining long-time sponsor Publix are Walgreens; Top Flight paper company; the Social Media Alliance of Chattanooga; Fairway Outdoor; WRCB TV; Chattanooga Times Free Press; Clear Channel Radio Group; Chattanooga Elks Lodge #91 in East Brainerd; Hamilton Place Mall; and the Chattanooga Market.

If you would like to join these sponsors in helping United Way, go online at www.liveunitedchattaooga.org for a list of events and drop off locations.

Our Work on the Westside
There is a lot of good work happening on the Westside, thanks to United Way and its partners.

Last month, United Way staff and volunteers joined the staff at the Sheila Jennings/Westside Rec center to drop off donations for summer camp, read to and play ball with the kids, and see first hand how United Way supported programs and partners are working to make a difference in these kids' lives by keeping them out of gangs and helping them to graduate high school.

Some of our partners in these mentoring programs are the YMCA, the Chattanooga Housing Authority, and the Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Dept.

Watch this video from the Westside with Alison Lebovitz  and Solomon McGee, the Westside Mentoring program director, and sign up to mentor a child today!
