United Way Tops $11.9M
| "Thanks to generous donors who give more and more each year to help their communities, and thanks to a hardworking campaign cabinet, dedicated staff members at United Way, and hundreds of company volunteers, $11,932,321 was raised for our community," announced Tom Glenn, United Way's Campaign Chairman for 2011.
Approximately 150 people joined United Way at its annual meeting and campaign celebration to hear from our leaders how this organization is working to create impact in our community and help our neighbors build opportunities for better lives for all.

Grab a Hat and Read with the Cat!

This week, through March 3, United Way will hold a reading hour at the Center Stage in Hamilton Place Mall. Today through Friday, March 2, there will be a book reading from 6 to 7 p.m. each evening, along with free book enrollments and a book-related literacy activity for kids and their parents to enjoy. Local celebrities will be on hand to help with readings all week. You can see Kim Carson reading Horton Hears a Who on our Facebook page.
The week will culminate on Saturday, March 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a big birthday party to honor Dr. Seuss that will be emceed by Julie Edwards from WRCB TV 3. There will be snacks, book readings, arts & crafts, prizes while they last, a visit from the Cat in the Hat, and we'll sing happy birthday to Dr. Seuss. The first 500 children in attendance will also get a free Dr. Seuss book courtesy of the Kiwanis Club of Chattanooga. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., children can get a learning check up at the Emerson Russell Play Area in the Mall. Families also get a free family pass to the Creative Discovery Museum for every child who has a learning check-up.

The Deadline For Nominations For the Volunteer United Awards Has Been Extended!

If you have not yet submitted your nominations for the "Volunteer United" Awards, it's not too late! Nominations are now being accepted through Monday, March 5! Nominate the extraordinary volunteers you work for special recognition in the following categories: Community, Education, Environment, Health, Youth Who Volunteer (18 and younger), Disaster Services Group (new this year!), Disaster Services Individual (new this year!) and National Service Volunteer (i.e. VISTAS, RSVP). In addition, we are seeking nominations for the Corporate Volunteer Award. Individuals may nominate a company in honor of their community involvement and companies may self-submit.To nominate a volunteer or company, complete an application at: http://www.uwchatt.org/nomination . Awards will be presented at the annual "Volunteer United" Awards Banquet, sponsored by United Way's Volunteer Center, DOVIA (Directors of Volunteers in Agencies) and the Chattanooga Corporate Volunteer Council, held on Tuesday, April 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Unum Atrium located in the West Building.

This is the story of Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge: he must protect a small world and guard an abandoned egg. Although Horton faces many obstacles, his one-tailed neighbor, Gertrude McFuzz, never loses faith in him.
Public shows: March 2, 3, and 4 (Friday shows at 7:30 p.m. and Sat. and Sun. shows at 2:30 p.m.)

AMUSE'UM March 3
"From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere!"
Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat will come to life at Creative Discovery Museum on Saturday, March 3, 2012. Dr. Seuss once said, "You make 'em, I amuse 'em." The Museum will be carrying out the tradition by preparing for a rhyme of a time at the annual AmuseUm fundraiser, the party for adults that benefits kids. The party will begin at 7 p.m. Dress is casual, and tall, striped hats are optional.
