| Area Stimulus Plan Can Bring in Millions |
There's a stimulus plan for hard- working people right here at home. The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga, a United Way partner agency, offers free tax preparation and filing at area Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) centers through a partnership with the IRS, United Way's 2-1-1, and Tennessee Saves. This service allows families earning less than $49,000 to keep their income while taking advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit. Scheduling an appointment is easy - just dial 2-1-1. Last year, this service brought $3.7 million in refunds back to our community. As this money was spent, it multiplied across our local economy. Last year's free tax preparation service had a local economic impact of $9 to $12 million.
You can read more online about the tax preparation and filing service. This is one way United Way works to strengthen our communities by identifying and tackling the underlying causes of financial problems facing today's families. United Way is helping lower-income individuals and families achieve financial independence by providing them with the tools and skills necessary to maximize their income, build savings and gain assets.
