Dear youth and parents,
Back in February when Larry Thomas, Kera Watts, Steve Midgley, and I were at the Sticky Faith Summit at Fuller Seminary, each of the 28 church teams were asked to introduce themselves and share an example from their church of something that promotes a faith that sticks. We realized there was a lot to choose from at UCC, and decided that one of the most unique things is the number of youth serving in major leadership positions that are usually occupied by adults (especially deacons, administrative committees, and ministry committees). I shared the story of how Timothy Alland was nominated during his 8th grade year to finish out the term of a deacon who had to vacate their position, and how that led to more and more youth serving in those leadership positions every year since. Everyone around the room was pretty amazed, and Brad Griffin from the Fuller Youth Institute asked if I would write a guest blog post sharing the story. It was published recently, and you can read it for yourself here. Then, think about how we can find even more ways to integrate our youth throughout our congregation. Great things are happening, but there are plenty of additional opportunities all around us!
Read on for another family-oriented reflection from the Sticky Faith Lenten resource we're using at youth groups, Camp Registration Day, an easy way to volunteer this summer, mission trip details, and more!

Lenten idea for parents: Lose
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Jessica Vacketta:
As we approach Good Friday, we are faced with the inevitable reality of pain and loss. There is no way to get to the transformational power of Easter Sunday without going through the grief of Good Friday. There is no way to new life other than through giving up, surrendering, and losing. This week, talk about losses in your life. Some kids haven't experienced much loss in their lifetime. This would be a good week to take time to share your experiences of loss, suffering and pain with your kids. However, be mindful that loss is a part of life and of following Jesus, but it's not the end of the story. Maybe your family can repeat this phrase (or one like it) to each other all week to remind each other that even though life can be hard, we can still have hope: "It's Friday, but Sunday's coming."
Register for summer camps at Disciples Crossing this Sunday!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ Youth and children from Pre-K through 12th grade have the opportunity to grow closer to God and one another this summer at Disciples Crossing, our church camp in Athens. There are nine different camps spread across the summer, each with a different focus. To see a full list of camp descriptions, dates, and prices, click here. For a registration form, click here. And for a tally sheet to total up your check, click here. UCC is covering $100 of the registration cost for those who register early for 6th-12th grade camps, and additional full or half scholarships are available to cover the early-bird price if needed.
The easiest way to register for camps and mission trips will be our Camp Registration Day - this Sunday, April 1. Sharyn Peterson will be set up in Fellowship Hall from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and again from 6-7 p.m. with plenty of blank registration forms and tally sheets. Registering that day ensures that you make the early bird deadline, saving up tp $130 off the regular registration price. In addtition to summer camps, you can also sign up for youth mission trips, the Soul Brothers Retreat, and youth and adult volunteers can sign up for Vacation Bible School (June 26-29). Mark your calendar and we'll see you Sunday! |

Volunteers needed to pick up Sunday morning snacks in July
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~
From Susan Rogers, Sunday Snack Coordinator:
Each Sunday the youth ministry provides tasty refreshments for youth who make the effort to get up, get dressed, and come to Sunday School. This is a much-loved part of our program whose success depends on the coordinated help of parent volunteers. It is also, in my experience, one of the more rewarding short term, low-commitment volunteer activities you can undertake at UCC.
We need volunteers for Sunday morning snack pick up in July. It's an easy assignment: pop in to a local vendor where our order awaits you, grab the bagels or donuts, and go to church. You will get a friendly reminder twice before your pick up dates by email, text, or both.
This is a great way to cement your child's connection to the church by being a little involved (but not so much that you are uncool), accompanying them upstairs to deliver the food, and then going on to your Sunday a.m. activity.
Please consider assisting. If you can only take a couple of dates in these months, your help would still be very welcome! If you'd like to help, please contact me at sundaysnackvolunteers@yahoo.com to sign up.
