Dear youth and parents,

This week I have been putting in a lot of prep work for UCC's participation in the Sticky Faith Cohort sponsored by the Fuller Youth Institute.  In addition to preparing a one-page church profile and participating in a webinar, I completed a 1.5 hour survey about our church to help them tailor the program to us.  One of the things that amazed me as I answered some of the questions was that I had a lot of difficulty coming up with negative trends in our church or our youth ministry.  Not that everything is coming up roses or couldn't be improved, but from my perspective the trend has been very positive when I look over the last couple of years.

When I think about the youth ministry specifically, I am still struck by the impact of our partnership with Youth Ministry Architects (it came up in two different meetings this week, only one of which was a youth-related meeting).  Yesterday I found a recent interview with their founder and president, Mark DeVries, that's worth a read if you have 10 minutes to spare.  It provides an excellent snapshot of the principles that are guiding UCC's youth ministry, as well as some helpful thoughts on some other timely topics that made me wonder if he's been in our church eavesdropping over the last couple of weeks.  You can check out the interview here.

Read on for information on Midwinter retreats, Super Bowling, two new studies, and more!

Grace and Peace,
Russ

Super Bowling for youth and children this Sunday afternoon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bowling lane graphic It's time once again for UCC's annual Super Bowling, where our middle and high school youth will take to the lanes alongside elementary children and parents for an afternoon of fun. This year's event will take place this Sunday, February 5 with check-in at 2:15 p.m. and bowling until 4:30 at Cityview Lanes (6601 Oakmont Blvd). $10 gets you unlimited games and shoe rental, and food and drinks will be available from the snack bar.  This is a great opportunity to invite friends, challenge parents, or include younger siblings. Hope to see you there!
Our youth in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to join high schoolers from Disciple churches around the area for the CYF Midwinter Retreat coming up February 24-26 at Disciples Crossing, our church camp in Athens. This annual retreat offers the opportunity to grow closer to God and one another through worship, recreation, prayer, small groups, Bible studies, and interest groups that include options like sports, dance, art, service, photography, and more.
Our youth will meet at UCC at 5:30 p.m. that Friday to share a charter bus to camp, and will return around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. The cost for the retreat is $90 and full or half scholarships are available upon request. Registration forms are due to the Youth Office by Monday, February 6, and you can download one by
New study for parents: Passing on a faith that sticks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sticky Faith book cover

Parents often think that the person who most influences their kids' faith development must be a minister, Sunday school teacher, or youth worker.  However, study after study shows that parents have the most influence.  Because that's the case, it's important for parents to learn how they can pass on a faith that "sticks" when their child moves into young adulthood.

Starting on February 12, UCC will offer a Sunday evening study for parents based on the book Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids by Kara Powell and Chap Clark.  Each of the five sessions uses a video and discussion questions to build on ideas presented in the book, helping parents to learn from one another as well as leading researchers.  Class sessions will take place from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in Room 204 (parallel to our youth and children's programs).  Copies of the book are available for $10 by contacting Sharyn Peterson at sharyn@uccftw.com.

Generation Change faith & finance study for high schoolers

Generation Change logo

Starting on February 12, our high school youth have the opportunity to explore how their faith should influence their finances through the Generation Change course.  This 8-session class takes the principles of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University and translates them for youth who are beginning to think about budgeting, personal finance, giving, and more.  The study will be hosted by the 9th-10th grade Sunday school class in the 3rd floor kitchen, but any high school youth is welcome to participate.  If you're interested, read the letter from the teachers here for additional class details, then e-mail sharyn@uccftw.com to register and reserve a student kit.
