Dear youth and parents, This morning I graduated from the Chaplain Captain Career Course here at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and I'm definitely ready to be home. It's really been a great course and I've made a lot of friends with the 21 other Army Reserve and National Guard chaplains who have been in class with me (along with many of the instructors and staff at the Chaplain School). Last week I listed a lot of the helpful topics that we covered as preparation for our future roles as Brigade Chaplains, and this week we experienced a whole different style of learning as we spent two 12-hour days simulating a homeland disaster response that brought together local, federal, and military personnel. I definitely have a much better understanding of how our country would respond to a large-scale domestic crisis, as well as what my role would be as a part of the Army Reserve. Good training, but ready to return to my family and my church! Since I received it today, I thought I would share our class photo. It was taken in the memorial garden of the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Center, which includes a statue of a chaplain comforting a grief stricken soldier and a wall listing the 294 chaplains and 12 chaplain assistants who have died in conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the present. You can click it to see the larger version, to find me just look for the guy wearing camouflage! There are several items in this week's e-news, including registration information for the CYF Fall Retreat, a last call to register for this year's Disciples Class, and an invitation to Youth Sunday at The Search this Sunday evening. I hope to see you there!
Grace and Peace, Russ
