Dear youth and parents,

As I mentioned last week I'm currently away at the U.S. Army Chaplain Center & School at Fort Jackson, South Carolina for the Chaplain Captain Career Course.  Though I don't enjoy being away from my family and church for almost two weeks, I have to say that this is an excellent course and I have connected with wonderful classmates who all serve as chaplains in the Army Reserve and National Guard.  To give you an idea of what my classes have been covering, so far the topics have included leadership development, critical thinking, the Military Decision Making Process, religious support for civil authorities in a homeland crisis, risk management, preaching in the military context, history of combined warfare, media/public affairs/interview skills, religious/key leader liaisons, and confidentiality in counseling.  And that's just in the first four days, I still have six class days to go!

This is a BIG weekend at UCC as we host the annual CYF Day event sponsored by TCU on Saturday, then welcome our neighbors in the community to the Trunk-Or-Treat event on Sunday.  Read on for details on these opportunities, as well as fundraising before the TCU game and the upcoming Disciples Class.

Grace and Peace,
Russ

Parking lot fundraiser - TCU vs. New Mexico this Saturday

Small UCC youth logo From Mike Morton, Youth Fundraising Chair:

Each home game this season has had its own unique twist, and this week is no exception.  This Saturday, the Horned Frogs play New Mexico and game time is at 1 p.m.  It's homecoming weekend at TCU and UCC is hosting the CYF Day youth event for TCU.  Homecoming should mean an early arriving crowd and a full house.

CYF Day brings its own set of challenges because related events (campus tours, etc.) begin around 10 a.m.  Many churches in our region will bring their youth in vans and will start arriving around 9 a.m.  In order to not cannibalize too much of the parking, we will need to direct them where we want them to park.  Additionally, CYF Day worship starts at 11:30 and most of our high school youth participate, so they will not be available to help with parking during the rush before kick-off.

With all of that said, here is what we need for this week's parking:

9 a.m. - 2-3 adults and/or high school youth to help direct the vehicles arriving from churches for CYF Day;

10 a.m. - 2-3
volunteers to open the reserved lot.  If we have an additional 4-6 volunteers, we can also open 1 or 2 of the daily lots at this same time.  High School Youth: These are your opportunities to earn an hour or two of credit and still attend the CYF events.

11 a.m -
By this time, we need 12-15 volunteers working and all lots open.  With the older youth in CYF Day worship, we need a large percentage of these to be adults (though they can be assisted by middle school youth).

If you are able to be there at either 9 or 10 a.m., please email me at m_morton@sbcglobal.net and let me know so I can plan the schedule. To work the "regular" parking shift, please be at UCC by 11 a.m.

One other thing regarding our Reserved Lot: Those who have paid the premium to have a spot were assured their spot would be available until 30 minutes after kickoff. That means one or two people need to stay at that lot until 3 p.m. but only if any of the reserved spots are still open at kickoff to be certain the spots are available. If you are not going to the game and can stay until 1:30 p.m., please email me at the above address so we have this covered.

After this game there are only two home games left: Nov. 19 and Dec. 3.

Youth and adults needed at "Trunk-or-Treat" this Sunday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Trick or treating graphic
UCC will be hosting a Trunk-or-Treat event for children 5th grade and younger this Sunday, October 23 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the church's front and side parking lots. In addition to trick-or-treating from decorated vehicle trunks, there will be a carnival atmosphere with food and outdoor  activities for kids. Last year we welcomed over 100 families to this event, many of them guests from the surrounding community.  We know we need even more trunks and volunteers this year, so here's how youth and adults can help:
- Bring your vehicle (or a vehicle you borrow) to pass out candy from your trunk or tailgate. You're encouraged to decorate your trunk for Halloween or using a theme that suits you - awards will be given for the best trunks!
- Arrive by 6 p.m. to help get ready for the event so that everything is set when guests start arriving.
- There are plenty of other places to plug in on an as-needed basis. Help with the bounce house, assist with food, lend your talent to a trunk decorator who needs a hand, etc. Just come at 6 p.m. in a kid-friendly costume and find a job that suits you!
NOTE: There will be NO YOUTH GROUP MEETINGS or snack supper that Sunday night so that all youth can help with the trunk-or-treat event.
