Water for All - Hey youth, are you up for the H2O challenge?
Prom Dreams grand opening soon - here's how you can help!

Dear youth and parents,

Our church is launching into a "month of compassion" to provide even more support for Week of Compassion, the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Two of the major events for youth are coming up this weekend: the "Fashion for Compassion" event on Sunday afternoon, and the H2O Project that will be promoted at Sunday school, youth groups, and outside our morning and evening worships services.  Read on for more about these exciting opportunities for youth and adults to make a difference in the world, along with some other great ways to plug in here at UCC!

Grace and Peace,
Russ

Meeting Saturday for summer mission pilgrimage to Nicaragua

At CYF Conference a couple of years ago, keynoter Laurie Feille shared stories about Project Chaocente, a mission organization that helps adults and children living on the city dumping site in Managua, Nicaragua to move out. UCC camper Katie Puckett and her small group were so moved by the stories that they committed to organize a trip to Nicaragua to help.  Katie is now a college freshman, and because of her determination and lots of help from Cyndy Twedell and others the mission pilgrimage is happening this summer!

The intergenerational trip (ages 16 and up) will take place July 26 - August 2 and the cost (without fundraising) is approximately $1200 per person. There is an informational meeting at UCC next Saturday, February 19, at 5 p.m. If you are interested in going on this trip, please do two things: use this link to download and complete the interest form and contact Cyndy Twedell at cyndy@uccftw.com

Katie has been writing a great blog that tells all about the origin of the trip, the work she and others are doing to prepare, and her progress as she runs 600 miles (!) before the day the trip begins to raise money.  Click here to visit her blog, "Running (to the) Well."

Come to Room 207 this Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. for Fashion for Compassion, a fun fashion show and tea that is open to the public. UCC youth and others will model vintage fashions from Bess and Evie's while attendees enjoy refreshments. The cost is $5 per person and all proceeds go to support Week of Compassion.  Oh, and be sure to check out Kalen Ruiz promoting the event on Good Morning Texas by clicking here

Hey youth and parents - Are you up for the H2O challenge?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
H2O project logo
As little as $1 can provide one person clean water for a year. Beginning this Sunday, February 20, UCC youth, children, and adults will be challenged to make water their only beverage for 2 weeks as part of the H2O Project. Here's how it works:
  • Make water your only beverage for 2 weeks.
  • Set aside all the money that you would normally have spent consuming soda, juice, milk, coffee, etc.
  • After 2 weeks, the money you saved will be collected and donated to the Disciples' Week of Compassion fund to help provide clean water to those in need.
Instruction cards, cups for collecting money, and bracelets to raise awareness and serve as a reminder of the challenge will be passed out this week at Sunday school for grades 6-12 and again at Sunday evening youth groups. There will also be a table set up in the Gallery in the morning and outside Fellowship Hall during The Search where adults can sign up to participate as well! (Family challenge, anyone?) For more information on the H2O project, visit www.theh20project.org.
Sewing and donations needed before Prom Dreams launch
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prom dresses

Can you sew???  If you answered "yes" then the Prom Dreams Ministry needs your help! The space above the Children's Closet is almost finished with a first round of renovations, but the cushions for the couch, ottomans, and chairs still need to be covered with fresh fabric. A professional seamstress is not needed - these are just basic coverings. Please contact Jessica at jessica@uccftw.com if you are able to volunteer your time and talent.

The Prom Dreams Launch Team met last night and we are still in need of dresses, accessories, and other gently used formal wear for men and women. A collection drive is scheduled for the second week of March. Donations will be collected Monday-Friday, March  7-11, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the reception area at church.  Volunteers are needed to help collect and sort dresses on these dates. Please e-mail jessica@uccftw.com if you can serve on any of the collection days.
