Dear youth and parents, The church is abuzz this week as everything comes together for the annual Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival. Many of you are already signed up to participate, but if you're not I highly encourage you to come experience this incredible event. Performances are at 3 and 5 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, and it's a good idea to get here 30 - 45 minutes early for a good seat. For details on the Boar's Head Festival, click here. I will be flying to San Antonio tonight to serve as one of the presenters at a Yellow Ribbon event for the 994th Veterinary Company, one of the units based in Round Rock that falls under my Army Reserve battalion. Yellow Ribbon events are set up before, during, and after a unit deploys so that soldiers and there families are prepared for what lies ahead, nurtured during the deployment, and reintegrated into family life in a healthy way after the deployment ends. I will be presenting as part of a Phase 1 event, sharing information on relationship issues and stress that may be encountered after the unit deploys to Kuwait later this month to support operations in Afghanistan. Your prayers are appreciated as I provide support to the soldiers and family members in attendance who are experiencing a mix of emotions prior to a 12-month deployment. I'll be back on Saturday night and look forward to leading the orientation for our first-ever Disciples Class on Sunday morning. 25 youth signed up for this 12-week class that will help them prepare to make an informed decision about church membership and baptism, and I encourage you to keep this group of young people, their families, and their mentors in your prayers as well. Grace and Peace, Russ

Prom Dreams volunteer opportunity - Saturday, January 15
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Renovation of the Prom Dreams space above the Children's Closet is going well after two work days over Christmas break! The next volunteer opportunity will be Saturday, January 15 with work from 9 a.m. - noon and 1-5 p.m. You're welcome to come for the morning, afternoon, or (better yet) both. No need to RSVP to help, just show up at the Children's Closet (house next to the church) willing to work and wearing clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty. If you are interested in volunteering your time, fabric, or other supplies for this ministry, please contact me at jessica@uccftw.com. |
Try Sunday night youth groups when they return on January 16
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Youth Sunday school classes resumed last Sunday, and Sunday evening youth groups will return on January 16 after a hiatus for Christmas break and the Boar's Head festival. We'll be using the same schedule as last semester: Snack supper for $3 in the 3rd Floor Kitchen at 6 p.m. followed by Chi Rho and CYF youth group meetings from 6:30 - 7:45. If you've never been to our Sunday night youth groups, the start of a new year is a great time to jump in!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our youth in grades 6-8 have the opportunity to join middle schoolers from Disciple churches around the area for the Chi Rho Midwinter Retreat coming up February 4-6 at Disciples Crossing, our church camp in Athens. This annual retreat offers the opportunity to grow closer to God and one another through worship, recreation, prayer, small groups, and interest groups that include options like sports, dance, art, service, photography, and more.
Our youth will meet at UCC at 5:30 p.m. that Friday to share a charter bus to camp, and will return around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. The cost for the retreat is $80 and full or half scholarships are available upon request. Registration forms are due to the Youth Office by Sunday, January 16, and you can download one by clicking here. Parents: We will need adult chaperones to attend the retreat as well.
