Dear youth and parents,

I had the opportunity to attend the two-day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) course this week and it was a really incredible experience.  Though the Army sent me to the course, ASIST is a civilian initiative that is open to anyone who would like to develop the skills and learn the proven tactics that can prevent a suicidal individual from taking his or her own life.  Though I was certainly able to help before, now that I'm ASIST certified I especially want to reinforce that I'm a resource you can access if you encounter someone who you are concerned may be suicidal.  To learn more about ASIST or the less intensive safeTALK, visit www.livingworks.net.  If this kind of training is something that appeals to you, be sure to look through the upcoming training events to find one you can attend.

Read on for information on LOTS of upcoming opportunities, and I'll see you Sunday!

Grace and Peace,
Russ

Can't wait for January's film festival to have a meaningful movie discussion?  Good news!  Timothy Alland has arranged for high school youth to gather and watch The Legend of Bagger Vance (starring Will Smith and Matt Damon) after church this Sunday afternoon.  Participants will meet in Parable Pictures (the JourneyLand theater, Room 210) at 12:15 p.m. to share lunch, watch the movie, and discuss.  Bring $5 to cover lunch, and RSVP to Jessica Vacketta at jessica@uccftw.com so that you're included in the lunch order.

Prom Dreams - CYF Sunday school elective starts this Sunday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Starting this Sunday, September 19 there will be a four-week service opportunity during the Sunday school hour for youth in grades 9-12. UCC is starting a new "Prom Dreams" ministry under the leadership of Gerry Houk that will use space above the Children's Closet to provide gently-used prom dresses to girls who need them. Youth will help during Sunday school by working on an interior design plan, marketing ideas, and a dress donation drive. Participants will meet with all other youth for refreshments and announcements each Sunday morning before walking to the Children's Closet at 10 a.m.
There are 4 slots (out of 12) still available for participants, and youth can claim one by signing up before Sunday school this Sunday morning or by e-mailing Jessica Vacketta at jessica@uccftw.com.
30 Hour Famine logoHey parents: Are you interested in a study for adults during our Sunday night youth groups?  Come check out God's Economy, a Faith Matters Sunday Night Series led by Rev. Daniel Terry exploring how we are invited to step into the good life God intends for us to enjoy here and now.  The book for the study (God's Economy: Redefining the Health and Wealth Gospel) is $10, and you can click here to read more about it.  The study will meet in Room 211 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. for six weeks (September 12 - October 17).  E-mail Rebecca Terry at rebecca@uccftw.com to sign up.
Men's Ministry invites youth to "Breakfast with the Guys" Sep. 25
Chi Rho and CYF train ride, broomball and lunch - September 25
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jessica and Herb have put together a fun youth outing to Dallas to play broomball, the hockey-esque game played in normal shoes at an ice rink.  All interested middle and high schoolers will meet at the T&P train station downtown at 10 a.m. to take the train to Dallas, play broomball at America's Ice Garden, have lunch together at Spaghetti Warehouse, and take the train back to Fort Worth for a 5 p.m. pick-up.  $20 covers your train rides, broomball, and lunch.  (As always, full or half scholarships are available upon request.)

Reservations and a liability release signed by a parent or guardian are both required for this event.  RSVP to Jessica at jessica@uccftw.com by Thursday, September 23 to make a reservation, and click here to download the liability release to turn in on Sunday or bring with you on September 25.  Invite a friend, and we'll see you on the ice!

Save the date (and your stuff) for the UCC Garage Sale - Mar. 5

Have some things around the house that you've been meaning to get rid of?
Don't ditch them just yet...save them for the UCC Garage Sale on March 5!  The sale will take place in Fellowship Hall and your tax-deductible donations (accepted beginning in January) help fund the renovation of youth classrooms on the third floor.  Volunteers (adults and youth) are needed for many different jobs before and during the sale, from picking up donations to sorting clothing to serving as a cashier.

Contact Cyrena Allen at c2b2@lawrence-allen.com or Kalen Ruiz at kalenruiz@hotmail.com to volunteer or get more information.
