Youth Trialogue begins Oct. 25 with trip to Jewish temple

Dear youth and parents,

Anna and I just returned from a great meeting with representatives from Beth-El Congregation and the Islamic Association of Tarrant County to finalize our upcoming tri-faith series for youth (new name: "Youth Trialogue").  We are all very excited about what's in store, as youth from three historic faiths gather to learn more about each other and develop connections that build on our similarities while respecting our differences.  Our prayer is that after this series our 7th-10th graders will not only have a better understanding of their Jewish and Muslim neighbors, but a better understanding of their own faith as well.

I wanted to be sure to explain why this series is targeted to four grades in particular, which may seem a bit odd.  The trialogue was actually initiated by the religious education director from Beth-El, and was designed to suit older middle schoolers and younger high schoolers.  Their youth program actually ends after 10th grade, and high school juniors and seniors participate in adult classes.  The mosque has a similar structure, and focusing on those grades worked perfectly for them.  Though UCC's youth program is set up differently, we agreed to stick with the grades in question so that the participants from our church would be coming from the same grades as everyone else, allowing us to tailor the program to that specific audience.  So, grades 7-10 it is.

If you have (or are) a 7th-10th grader, be sure to mark October 25 and November 8 and 15 on your calendar for the three trialogue events, and read on for more details on this and other youth activities coming up.

Grace and Peace,
Russ

Youth Night Out for Chi Rho rescheduled
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unfortunately we do not have enough RSVP's from our 6th-8th grade youth to qualify for the group rate at Putt Putt, so Friday's Chi Rho Youth Night Out will be rescheduled for a later date.  Thanks to those who RSVP'd and were ready to play, we'll look forward to seeing you at our next Youth Night Out.
Which reminds me...our next scheduled Youth Night Out will be Friday, November 20 at Cityview Lanes.  We'll be having a bowling competition with other Disciple churches in the area, complete with cheesy bowling trophies for the top Chi Rho and CYF teams.  Mark your calendar now!
Next parking lot fundraiser - this Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Anna's staff photo UCC's youth and parents have an opportunity to raise money again this Saturday, October 17 by parking cars for the big TCU-Colorado State game.  Each hour worked by youth and/or parents earns credit toward registration costs for camps, mission trips, and the ski retreat (plus funds for UCC's youth ministry to use for scholarships and 3rd floor improvements).  The last two games have brought in over $50 of credit per volunteer.
Volunteers should sign in by 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.  Kickoff will be at 3 p.m.
CROP Walk and free luncheon this Sunday afternoon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CROP Walk graphic People from churches around Fort Worth will gather at TCU this Sunday, October 18 at 1:30 p.m. for the CROP Walk, an annual event that raises money (and awareness) to end hunger.  UCC will be walking again this year, and we'll even have a complimentary lunch for all walkers at 12:15 p.m. in Fellowship Hall before we head over to the Alumni Center for the walk.  This year, part of the money will go to Church World Service, and part will stay local to support the food bank's BackPacks for Kids program.

Competitive note: Last year we took home three trophies (most walkers, most youth, and first finisher) and this year we hope to earn those awards again.  If you're available this Sunday (youth, parents, siblings), come on out and join the fun!

Chi Rho Fall Retreat - registration deadline extended!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Campfire graphic The annual Chi Rho Fall Retreat for youth in grades 6-8 will take place November 6-8 at Disciples Crossing, our church camp in Athens.  The theme this year is "RE: Worship" and over the course of the weekend, our youth and adults will focus on RE:alizing, RE:claiming, and RE:vitalizing worship.  Registration forms are due in the Youth Office by Wednesday, October 21 (thanks to a deadline extension by the TBA Outdoor Education Committee). The cost is $80 and scholarship assistance is available upon request.  Registration forms are available in the Youth Office or online at www.uccyouth.org.
Youth Trialogue begins October 25 at Beth-El Congregation
Trialogue logo UCC's youth in grades 7-10 will be joining with Jewish and Muslim youth for a three-part "trialogue" that kicks off on Sunday, October 25.  Participants will meet in Fellowship Hall at 9:30 a.m. to carpool to Beth-El Congregation where they will learn more about Judaism. The event ends at noon and participants will return to the church at 12:15 p.m.
The series will continue on November 8 when we welcome Jewish and Muslim youth to UCC for a program focused on Christianity, followed by the final event on November 15 at the Islamic Association of Tarrant County hosted by our Muslim neighbors.  A few notes about the trialogue:
- This event will take the place of Chi Rho boys/girls and CYF Alpha (grades 9-10) Sunday school classes.  Faith Development Class and CYF Omega will still meet.
- We will have very snazzy t-shirts available for only $5.  Click here for a preview.
- Parents interested in driving/chaperoning should e-mail me at russ@uccftw.com.
