Helpful information for UCC youth and parents
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear youth and parents,
Some of you started back to school this week, and many of you will do so next week. Even so, I know a lot of our youth have been busy for weeks with band, fall sports, and other things that get going before school even begins. In the midst of that business, a group of 33 youth and adults were able to get away to Briarwood Retreat Center in Copper Canyon for UCC's Back-to-School Retreat. During the weekend we focused on five practices that we need to commit to if we want to be the church instead of just going to church. The practices have become well-known thanks to Robert Schnase's book Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations (and a variety of spin-off books and studies, including the youth edition). The five practices are: radical hospitality, passionate worship, intentional faith development, risk-taking mission and service, and extravagant generosity. This past weekend was just the starting point, and in various ways throughout the year we'll be inviting all of our youth to think about what each of these practices looks like for them and for our church. To help spread the idea, we have new UCC youth shirts for this year that many of you may have seen in church on Sunday. They're navy blue with the words "Don't go to church." on the front, and "Be the church." on the back (plus a UCC youth logo on the sleeve). These classy, eye-catching shirts are available in a variety of sizes for only $10. If you'd like to help spread the word through your attire, flag down one of our youth ministers on Sunday morning or evening and we'll be happy to hook you up with a shirt. But don't just wear it. Do your best to live it. Grace and Peace, Russ |
Promotion Sunday, FDC orientation this weekend
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's a big weekend at UCC as we promote youth to their new grades for Sunday school and welcome parents and participants in this year's Faith Development Class. Here are the details on both...
1. On Sunday morning, bagels and juice will be available starting at 9:45 a.m. in Room 303, which has started its transformation into our "Gathering & Game Room." Afterward, Sunday school classes will meet from 10:00 - 10:50 in the following rooms:
Faith Development Class (6th grade and up) - Room 304 [see note below]
Chi Rho Boys (grades 7-8) - Room 308
Chi Rho Girls (grades 7-8) - Room 307
CYF (grades 9-10) - Room 315
CYF (grades 11-12) - Room 311
2. I will be leading a Faith Development Class orientation at 10 a.m. in the chapel this Sunday for parents and youth participating in FDC. During the orientation, I will go over the structure and goals of FDC, introduce staff and volunteers who work with middle school youth, and provide a calendar and additional information about opportunities available to youth this year beyond FDC. Youth are welcome to come upstairs for fellowship time before we meet in the chapel. (Just be sure to finish your bagel and juice first!)

Contact info for Isaac Varner, UCC's Assistant Minister for CYF
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rev. Isaac Varner's ministry as UCC's Assistant Minister for CYF (high school) got off to a quick start as he and his wife, Cherie, joined us for the Back-to-School Retreat last weekend. This week the church set up Isaac's office and e-mail, so I wanted to pass along his contact info. Isaac is in Room 301 on the third floor, an office he will be sharing with Anna Ross, our Youth Ministry Intern for Chi Rho, and Alec Ylitalo, Assistant Minister for Campus Ministries and The Search. His phone extension is 145 and his church e-mail address is isaac@uccftw.com. Be sure to get in touch and let him know you're glad he's here!
Youth Parents Meeting scheduled for August 30 at 6:30 p.m.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following our incredible experience with Youth Ministry Architects, UCC's Youth Committee moved swiftly to schedule a meeting for all parents of youth on Sunday evening, August 30 from 6:30-7:30 in Room 207. During the meeting we will be detailing some of the recommendations and goals from the YMA assessment, distributing and going over a calendar for youth events through Summer 2010, highlighting the major components of our programming for this year, providing opportunities to sign up for many different volunteer roles, and (hopefully) providing directories that include the names, grades, schools, and basic contact info of every UCC youth. Mark your calendar now, and I'll look forward to seeing you on August 30!

Youth Ministry Architects completes work; UCC's work begins
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From August 7-10, two consultants from Youth Ministry Architects (YMA) helped our staff and lay leadership create a mission statement, name and embrace our core values, identify short and long-term areas of focus for our youth ministry, and establish a timeline for realistic, measurable goals for staff, volunteers, and programs. About 80 different people participated in focus groups and visioning sessions over the course of the weekend, and almost 40 came to hear the final report and recommendations from the consultants and staff on Monday evening.
You can read the fruits of this labor for yourself by downloading two documents (click here for the PDF file). The first is the assessment and recommendations from Lesleigh Carmichael and Missy Carfield, the wonderful consultants from YMA who spent hours with us and even more hours on their own digesting the information preparing their report. The second is the youth ministry's mission statement, core values, and 3-year goals (with 1-year benchmarks), developed by the Youth Committee and staff with Lesleigh and Missy's guidance. I hope that you will take some time to read through the good, the bad, and the ugly...and that you will share my optimism about the future of youth ministry here at UCC as we work together to make this detailed blueprint a reality.
