Summer Newsletter            May 2012

Greetings!Colonial House Inn, Weston, VT

As the mountains are bursting with the colors of Spring here in Vermont, we are enthralled with the beauty that this season brings.  Vermont is gorgeous in any season, but this is one of our favorites with all the various shades of green.  No wonder we are called The Green Mountain State!

We are ready for the wonderful summer activities in the area:  award-winning theatre, music concerts, hiking to scenic vistas, or  the peaceful tranquility of kayaking on a hidden lake.  And, we are ready to welcome our visitors and hear your updates and news!

If you find yourself without plans this weekend, head up to see us . . . we have rooms open!  This Saturday, the West River Farmer's Market opens for the season and is filled with local artisans' wares, organic produce, local cheeses, baked goods and treats.  Nestled along the banks of the West River, the market is a treasure and part of our "Buy Local" tradition.

Do you recognize the people in this photo?  It dates back to May, 1979 when the Nunnikhoven's became the new owners of the Colonial House.  Look how cute we all were back then!  Left to Right: John, Betty, David and Kim with Rascal at our feet.  The Colonial House was established in 1969.  We have a house guest that we believe is one of the few who have been staying here annually.  A big "shout out" and "Thank You" to Pearl and her family for being guests here for over 40 years! If you have a photo or story to share, please post it to our FaceBook page . . . we really get a "kick" out of seeing them.

On the family news, we are all just great! Alexis is finishing up 2nd grade, will be 8 years old this summer and is no longer our "little baby"!  She will be helping us set tables, re-stock the coffee/tea/cookies and greet guests throughout the summer.  In between all that she is going to a couple of camps and taking swimming lessons so she can still be a kid!

David's "kids" have morphed into adults, Libby will be a Junior in the Fall at College and will be at the Farmer's Market with her own ice cream products this summer; Sam spent 2 1/2 months in the New Zealand outback as part of his studies and graduates High School next month; Jack will be a Junior in High School and just got his driver's license.  David keeps super busy at Grandma Miller's Bakery baking the world's best pies!

Betty and John are amazing and are re-defining the word "retirement".  Between twice weekly visits to the prison to see their "guys", mentoring and providing emergency housing, volunteering on boards and church activities, they fill their days to the brim!  They are "raising the bar" on retirement and paving the road for those of us who will follow. Dad published his 2nd daily devotional on the Psalms: Voices Together, Guide to Praying the Psalms, Volume 2.  You can purchase an autographed copy here at the Inn or order online  . . . a hard copy or download and e-book . . . how cool!

As the summer kicks off, we hope this finds you and yours doing well, too.  We hope your travels bring you up for a visit with us . . . we look forward to being your hosts and to getting our annual updates!  As you begin this season may you be blessed with good health and happiness this summer and always!

Fondly,

Jeff, Kim and Alexis Seymour

Things to do, Places to see!
Here are some of our favorite things to do that are free or almost:
  1. Weston Recreation Club - open to town residents and visitors, the Weston Rec has tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, swimming, a playground and picnic/grilling areas. A great place to hang out on a sunny day!
  2. West River Farmer's Market - open every Saturday from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, the market offers some of the finest local products from this area: baked goods, artisan cheeses, organic produce, pottery, artwork, local wool to name a few.  Make it a stop for lunch and wander through the 50+ vendors along the banks of the West River in Londonderry.
  3. Kinhaven Music Camp Concerts - free concerts in July and late August: Fridays at 4pm, Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2:30pm
  4. Sundays on the Hill Concerts - A $5 fee gives you a fabulous concert at the Old Church on the Hill in Weston.  One of our favorites is the vocal ensemble, Counterpoint coming in August
  5. Hildene Estate - in Manchester, the summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln.  A step back into time and a visit to a family history, the estate is lovely to tour with beautiful grounds.
  6. Lowell Lake Trail - in Londonderry, follow the 3.5 mile trail around the lake.  Near the dam, check out the cemetery with grave stones that date back to the American Revolutionary times. Take a picnic lunch, a fishing pole or kayak and enjoy the lake!
  7. Hamilton Falls - in Jamaica State Park; a lovely walk along an old railroad bed through the woods to these gorgeous falls
There are many more walks and hikes in the area including the Catamount Trail, the West River Trail, the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail.  Just let us know what interests you!
