STRATEGIC FAILURE - Or Planning for Success

Have you heard this phrase?  Companies don't plan to fail...They fail to plan!

No business is too small to develop, follow and update a strategic plan.  It could mean the difference between success and failure.  For many business owners, strategic planning is a burden.  It seems like an administrative nightmare to facilitate, and if it does take place, implementation is often dropped as soon as the  team gets back to business as usual.

So what is strategic planning really?  How can it help?

A good strategic plan will catapult you, your people, and your company into the future and into Success. Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy. The power of an effective strategic plan is in its ability to determine where a company is going, and how it is going to get there.

A recent study by the Association of Management Consulting Firms found that business strategy is now the single most important management issue and will remain so for many years.  Strategy has become a part of the main agenda of successful companies today.

Where to begin the strategic planning process?
There are a variety of perspectives and approaches used in strategic planning and the method we choose depends on the nature and culture of your business.  Depending on the complexity of your organization, your planning may be goal based, issue based or even scenario based.  But the method you choose is less important than the effort to actually go through the process.

If this article has raised more questions than answers, perhaps you need to consider some strategic planning initiatives.  Morris Interactive has a strong team of professionals who can help guide you through the strategic planning process, and provide ongoing support through the implementation and evaluation stages.

GOALS - To Set or Not To Set
"It doesn't matter where you are coming from. All that matters is where you are going."
Brian Tracy

What do most successful people have in common?  They set goals and achieve them.

The subconscious mind is a powerful tool...once you have set a goal or put a thought into the universe, the mind immediately busies itself figuring out ways to bring that goal to fruition.  But our minds must truly believe that the goal is possible otherwise we will be unlikely to find success.  If deep down we believe 'I will never be successful at this', then we never will be.

The first step then, is to set goals that we can believe and then to ensure that they are specific and measurable.  If we set a goal to be "thinner" we have no real measure for that goal.  How will we know when we have achieved it.  But if we define the weight we want to lose, for instance, 15 pounds in 6 months, we can clearly gauge our success.  We can also immediately busy ourselves with figuring out ways to achieve the goal.

It is helpful to have a series of goals, ranging from daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. You can always refine and change your goals as time goes on and situations change. Try to work out what steps would be needed to achieve your long range goal, and spread them out over the different time spans, to what you would need to achieve to end up with the final result. Try to make your goals realistic and achievable.

So spend some time this January 2010, set some personal, business and professional goals, and watch as you achieve new heights, new successes and abundance.

If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.
