Greetings!

LINC has been working for nearly three years to raise awareness for the highest priority conservation lands within the Florida Forever program. Our reach has grown significantly, reflected in recent statewide media coverage and high-profile exhibitions, drawing attention to the importance of Florida Forever. LINC's role, focusing on conservation, adds value to our partners' efforts to protect Florida by providing them with the visual communications tools they need to inspire action. At the same time, we're helping to connect a growing number of photographers to the most pressing conservation issues in Florida.

LINC has grown to the point where we're ready to hire an Executive Director. We're also overhauling our website to better reflect our talents, and are busy producing the 2011 Florida Forever calendar. Please consider helping us fulfill these goals by making a contribution.

This newsletter also offers lots of new ways for you to get involved with LINC. You can:
  · Direct prospective candidates to Executive Director search
  · Volunteer to find local retail outlets for the 2011 calendar
  · Follow us on Facebook or Twitter
  · Check back for updates on the programs below.

Sincerely,

Carlton Ward, Jr.

Florida Forever - For a Better Florida

Thanks to broad public support and the leadership of budget conference chairs Senator JD Alexander and Representative David Rivera, Florida Forever received $15 Million in funding for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. The renewed funding, although a small percentage of the $300 million for which Florida Forever is authorized annually, shows a sustained commitment to the state's flagship conservation program and provides hope for the future. Conservationist Profile: Eric Draper

Meet Eric Draper, the acting director of Audubon of Florida since 2009. He's worked with the Audubon Society for 15 years and is 57 years old. He is a champion of conservation and last year was named one of the top 40 "influencers" in Florida politics by Campaigns & Elections' Politics magazine. In 2008, Draper was awarded National Audubon Society's highest honor, the Charles H. Callison Award of professional distinction. He joined LINC's Board in spring 2009, and we caught up with him to learn more about his conservation philosophy.

"The most valuable thing that LINC has done so far is to organize sets of images supporting Florida Forever. They are just this great source of educational push in that way. They specialize in a type of communication that the rest of use, but we don't specialize in."

Life on the Edge: The Story of Florida's Nature Coast

In 2009, LINC began a trial run of a  new fiscal sponsorship program. The goal is to have artists or journalists apply to partner with LINC to produce conservation communications projects that fulfill LINC's mission.

For the pilot, we're providing the tax-exempt status and processing for donations to conservation photographer Eric Zamora, for his Life on the Edge (LOTE) project. Eric is documenting the fragile ecosystems and sustainability issues of Florida's Nature Coast. Learn more [here]. LOTE is now on exhibit at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville [more info]. So far the project is a success, paving the way for LINC to consider expanding fiscal sponsorship to other budding Florida projects in the coming months.
