AnMed Health

Dear Cancer Fund of America,

On behalf of all the patients at AnMed Health Cancer Center in Anderson, SC, thank you for the services you provide.

Many of our patients cannot afford to buy essential personal care items or over-the-counter medications. Your family enrichment packs provide these as well as many "feel good" items that brighten the patient's day.

We always get positive feedback on your care packages. Many patients say it's like Christmas when they open the large boxes of goodies. The candy and nutritional supplements are their favorites. People also enjoy getting children's items to give to their grandchildren, nieces or nephews.

Personally, I would like to thank you for the care package I receive every month for the Cancer Center.  These supplies allow me to put together smaller care packs for new patients, many of whom think your charity is too good to be true. We store the Carnation Instant Breakfast packets in the Infusion Center for patients to use when they're here and cannot eat. We've never had nutritional supplements donated to us before, and it's helping us to better serve our patients.

I will continue referring people to Cancer Fund of America as long as it's available, because it makes such a positive impact in our patients' lives.

Sincerely,

Lori Lucas

The Puyallup Tribal Health Authority

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians in Tacoma, Washington has a Cancer Navigator program, through the Puyallup Tribal Health Authority, that serves approximately 25 actively diagnosed cancer patients in the community.  The Navigator program is run by a Registered Nurse, who helps the patients with access to care and barriers one might face that would affect treatment compliance.  There are many barriers one can face during cancer treatment, such as financial burden after what insurance doesn't cover, or lack of transportation to appointments.  The nurse also helps patients with managing side effects from treatment and helps smooth coordination of care as a case manager between their primary care physician and the oncology specialists.

The Cancer Navigator program originally began in 2004 with the Puyallup Tribe, but due to a lack of funding it was short-lived and discontinued in 2005.  This much needed service received grant funding in January 2010, and has now been reinstated.  The cancer patients of this tribal health clinic that can't afford nutrition supplements or incontinence supplies have relied on the generosity of the Cancer Fund of America to help them with these items.  Hospice care packages have also gone out to our late-stage diagnosed patients with comfort items which have been well-received.  In times of a debilitating medical condition and emotional and financial crisis, this kind service makes all the difference!

CFA News

2010 has been a most rewarding year for CFA.  We have seen our program services grow to helping thousands of families both in our country and in other nations where suffering runs rampid.

The reason for our success is owed to three reasons:

When you are in the service of your fellow man, you are in the service of your God, the generous financial support of our donors, and the many prayers that are offered for our continued existence.

While we at CFA continue our prayers for researchers to find the cure for cancer, our mission of reaching out to those for whom research is too late continues.

For those many supporters who continue answering the "meal interrupting" phone calls or reading our pleading appeals- we can only say thank you and we hope that 2011 surrounds you and your loved ones with comfort, good health, and the blessings of heaven are poured upon you.

With CFA having just closed its fiscal year, it begins a very busy time for the accounting office.  We have to unload cabinets to put all the records in filing boxes for auditors to analyze and then create new files for 2011's records.

Being a 501©3 non-profit mandates that an independent audit be conducted yearly.  After analyzing our records, the auditors then submit a tax return ready for CFA's president's signature.  The tax return (990) is then mailed to the Internal Revenue Service.  This tax return is also used to send to some of the various states in which CFA raises its much needed funds.  Some state registrations are as simple as a one-page form while others are much more complex that may ask how much was raised in their state and how much was spent in program services in their state as well.

CFA is very proud of its 2009 percentages with 72% for program services, 26% for fundraising, and 2% for management and general.  We are hoping for similar percentages for 2010.  Once 2010 financials are completed by our outside auditors, we feel our figures will, once again, show a goodly amount spent on our programs.

A number of years ago CFA expanded its mission to aiding needy families in other countries, primarily by way of gifts in kind (GIK) donations we receive that the donor restricts for international use only.  While we must purchase many urgent care products, CFA does receive donations of tractor trailers load of commodities from generous companies which we can distribute within our country.  Even when products are donated, we still have a cost associated.  We must pay a procurement agent to research and find these products for us and shipping cost either to our warehouse or to an international organization to whom we are distributing the product.

When we obtain either donated or purchased products for distribtution within the U.S., we must redistribute via Fed-X to individuals.  So in reality a $100,000 donation of commodities may cost CFA $20,000 to $30,000 before reaching the end user.  Still a wonderful benefit to our program services.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who, through their charitable hearts, have given to help us in our mission to serve those who have been stricken by this undiscriminating disease.  For those who are in need of our services, you can apply on our website at www.cfoa.org or call us toll free at 1-800-578-5284 to request an application.

2010 has been a great year in the fundraising area.  While we receive more and more generous donations from our loyal supporters, the demand for more program services continues.  I am daily searching for new funding for this great cause.

Our patient services department tells me we need 6 loads of liquid meal replacements each year at a cost of $228,000 plus and an additional $135,000 cost for shipping to those we serve.  That is a need of $359,000 just for that one product.  There is always pressure to raise more money and for this reason the search never stops in the fundraising department.
