March Brings Success And
New Challenges For Scrub Brush

The CINE YOUTH FESTIVAL may never be the same.  Scrub Brush teen filmmaker, Daylin Bolding, recently submitted his short documentary to the prestigious film festival, with the hope of educating others about the day-to-day challenges facing New Orleans youth. Winners of the Cine Youth Festival will receive a 3 day workshop in filmmaking, and a special screening at the Chicago International Film Fest.  Join us in congratulating Daylin on completing his film, and taking steps to share it with a national audience.   See you in Chicago Daylin!

The Scrub Brush Team just wrapped up a series of interviews with community advocates working in high crime neighborhoods.  We interviewed Tillman Hardy from CEASE FIRE NEW ORLEANS, Dana Kaplan from the JUVENILE JUSTICE PROJECT OF LOUISIANA, Ed Buckner from THE PORCH, and August J. Collins from the YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROJECT.   They all had different perspectives and compelling stories about violent crime in New Orleans, but a common theme always emerged during our interviews - the need to support and positively engage troubled youth, as opposed to focusing on incarceration, and other punitive responses.  We agree, it's time for a change.

This month, we visited an area commonly known as "Murder Row," in the LEONIDAS NEIGHBORHOOD to speak with "Rolling Joe," a member of the PIGEON TOWN STEPPERS, about crime, and the importance of building up impoverished communities through partnerships with neighborhood groups.  Joe's interview was dramatically cut short by a shooting, just blocks away from the church we used as a backdrop for our interview.  It was a disturbing and somber moment that highlighted the urgent need for us to work together and make our city a healthy and safe place for everyone.

If you are involved with a grassroots effort to address violent crime in New Orleans, or you're interested in conducting an interview about our efforts for broadcast or publication, please contact Alex Willson, at crescent.city.film@gmail.com.  You may also connect with us on Facebook and MySpace.

Thanks for the Creative Support!

New Orleans Teen Discovers
New Passion For
Filmmaking

Daylin Bolding
"Daylin Bolding" - Photo courtesy of Scrub Brush Productions.

DAYLIN BOLDING is a seventeen year old junior in high school, from Mid-City, New Orleans.  Daylin aspires to attend college after high school, and hopes someday to produce music.   His passion for music includes Hip Hop performance, and playing the drums.  Naturally observant and analytical, he is sometimes mistaken for being overly shy.  Daylin is very intelligent, and always seems to have an abundant supply of insightful opinions or reflections to share.

Daylin has an instinctive understanding of camera work and photography, and knowing when to roll the camera to capture the moment.  He has been interested in filmmaking from a young age, and jumped at the chance to take part in the Murder through the Eyes of a Child documentary.

Daylin's film making skills have been growing leaps and bounds since he entered the program.  He has shown a penchant for time lapse photography, interspersed with "Aronofsky-esque" Hip Hop editing sequences, and hand held camera work.  Stay tuned... We're predicting a bright future for this young filmmaker.
