Message From the Deputy Executive Director of Environmental Programs
Summer has officially arrived and the countdown has begun for the 2012 London Olympics, with the opening gala on Friday, July 27, 2012. Behind the scenes of the athletic competitions, are lessons to be learned from our brothers and sisters across the shining sea. Specifically, why are the Olympic trials in London relevant to our efforts in fostering a sustainable South Bay?
Answers to that question are found in some of the articles within this newsletter meant to pique your interest. Innovative strategies that are environmentally sound are being "put into play" in such areas as housing and transporting athletes and visitors, food preparation and waste, green building design, and construction of re-usable viewing stands. Planning details take into account the local weather patterns, topography, natural resources, built environment, and behaviors of the locals as well as guests. What we don't know are the unintended consequences, such as the impact of the "text generation" on travel choices, communication venues or even ticket sales. Read on - there is so much more to the story.

London Olympics 2012
Sustainable Features Lead To Green Games
In 2010, Vancouver set a high standard for environmentally friendly Olympics with sustainability initiatives launched in conjunction with the Winter Games. Now, London's Olympic organizers have an ambitious plan to host the "first truly sustainable" games later this year. That's a bold goal, considering all the other tasks and issues that go with being the host of the world's highest-profile sporting event. Most athletes will have a few minutes or even a few seconds in the spotlight this summer, but London will be on camera for nearly three weeks, with the user-friendliness of its venues, basic services for visitors and event security under the media microscope.

What is the South Bay Connection to the Olympic Games?
Revisiting Los Angeles 1984 Olympics and Examining London's Approach towards Sustainability
The current student housing at California State University at Dominguez Hills was actually built for athlete housing for the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics. Green Building standards were not nearly what they are today. A few years ago the South Bay Environmental Services Center, working in Partnership with the City of Carson, pulled together West Basin Municipal Water District, Southern California Edison and The Gas Company to retrofit, at no cost to the University, the student housing. Over the winter break, the Partnership installed compact fluorescent light bulbs, high efficiency toilets, low- flow showerheads as well as faucet aerators. This not only helped to reduce energy and water use but, costs as well.
London's 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games have an entirely different ethic. "Sustainability was an important element of our bid and underpins our preparations and our vision for the legacy of London 2012" London 2012 Chairman, Seb Coe.

Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County
Green Energy from Waste
More than 128 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough for about 170,000 homes, are produced by ten of the Sanitation Districts'
