 Program Manager's Message

This month, in addition to timely information regarding our programs, we have two human interest articles that are not to be missed.  One is to announce the addition of a significant new member of our team, Catherine Showalter, Deputy Executive Director of Environmental Programs.  We are truly fortunate to have her expertise in the field of sustainability and the environment!  The other article is a success story involving one of our Volunteers and one of our programs, Energy Upgrade California . . . read on to learn what happened.

Miguel Vasquez, Crew Leader for The Building Doctors - a true Energy Upgrade Success Story

Miguel Vazquez was unemployed when he attended an Ocean Friendly Garden Workshop in February 2010 and learned about SBESC and Energy Upgrade California.   He is now happily employed as a Crew Leader for The Building Doctors, an Energy Upgrade California participating contractor, and will soon take the field test to become a BPI Certified Building Analyst.

"Test Drive" Food Service Equipment with No Obligation

The Gas Company offers free "test drives" of new commercial foodservice equipment with no obligation. Restaurant owners or managers may bring recipes and ingredients to the Gas Company Energy Resource Center in Downey, and compare new, energy efficient foodservice equipment in the state-of-the-art Food Service Equipment Center.  More than 150 pieces of equipment from more than 60 different manufacturers are available for testing, plus the use of a one-of-a-kind Ventilation and Baking Lab that allows testing up to five different combinations of ventilation hoods simultaneously. Call 1-562-803-7323 to schedule an appointment.

The West Basin Municipal Water District's  "Cash for Kitchens" program would also benefit restaurant owners or managers.  Call Martha Segovia at (310) 371-7222 x 209 for a free water-usage assessment and possibly free water-saving devices.

Cash Rebate Available to Residents
with Old Pool Equipment

The pool pump and motor operates 365 days each year regardless of the season, or whether or not it is being used for swimming laps or playing around in the water.  Southern California Edison is offering a generous $200 cash rebate on the purchase of a new variable-speed pool pump and motor which can save hundreds of dollars in annual energy costs.

L.A. Metro
Vanpools are GreatChanges to MAX

If you are one of the 15,000 South Bay commuters who use the MAX (Municipal Area Express) to get to your job in El Segundo, you may be affected by route eliminations, or at least fare hikes.

Won't you consider starting a vanpool?  Qualified vanpools receive a $400 subsidy every month to help defray the cost; they are an efficient and economical way of commuting to work and they save you money!  Metro will help you coordinate the details.

It doesn't cost anything to find out about how it works.   To schedule a vanpool meeting at your business, please call SBESC at (310) 371-7222 and ask for either Martha (x 209) or
Grace (x 206).

Honoring Local Businesses

West Basin Municipal Water District is a local wholesale water agency that provides drinking water and recycled water to residents, businesses and institutional users in the South Bay. West Basin works with businesses from every sector to improve water efficiency in the region through direct distribution and/or the use of financial incentives to implement efficiency measures and practices that save water, money, energy and are good for the environment.

It is important for businesses to be leaders in the community and demonstrate these practices.

Some of the businesses that have chosen to lead are being commended at a series of Business Appreciation Presentations that will take place over the next few months.
