Program Manager's Message

Today is Earth Day, April 22!   This Earth Day many of us are thinking how to green our personal economy as well as our environment.  They are not mutually exclusive.  For cities, homeowners and businesses, SBESC is there for you with information to help you save money and the environment.  Practices and upgrades that you put in place today can benefit you for years to come in reduced energy and water costs as well as leaving this planet a little bit better than you found it. Call an Energy Upgrade CA participating contractor today and start exploring how your home can operate more efficiently and economically.

Of course, if you have further questions, please call SBESC staff at (310) 371-7222.

Happy Earth Day from the staff and volunteers at South Bay Environmental Services Center!

Solar Can Be Part of Energy Upgrade California!SCE

The South Bay Environmental Services Center (SBESC), in conjunction with Southern California Edison (SCE) hosted a FREE Solar Fair in Torrance on Thursday, March 24th. Over 75 homeowners were in attendance. Lots of good information was presented by SCE and there was the opportunity for attendees to talk with six different licensed solar contractors to have specific questions answered.

L.A. Metro
A vanpool can reduce up vanpool
to 14 parking spaces!

Are you tired of paying over $4.00 a gallon

for gasoline? And with no end in sight?

Then Metro's Vanpool is for you! People who participate in the Metro Vanpool program can save 20% to 30% off the cost of vanpooling.  Metro provides an on-going monthly subsidy of up to $400 for qualified vanpools - and up to 70% off their usual commute costs if they switch from driving alone.  SBESC can help employees, employers, and commercial property owners get a vanpool started right away! For more information, please contact SBESC at (310) 371-7222 and ask for Grace or Martha.

Good Advice for All of South Bay

In Compliance with the City's National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit, the City of Torrance does routine cleaning and maintenance of the City's storm drains.

Storm drains go directly to the ocean, so residents in all areas of the South Bay are advised to not dump trash, debris, or liquids down the storm drains, gutters, or streets.  Run-off from private property, such as soapy water from washing cars and water from over-watering lawns that have been fertilized, can end up in our storm drains and ocean.  There are biodegradable and environmentally-friendly products for outdoor cleaning and landscape maintenance.

Coming on Saturday, June 18:  HHW/E-Waste Collection at Honda in Torrance.  Click here for a map and list of what to bring and what not to bring on June 18.

Volunteer Spotlight

Don Modica

Coming back home to Redondo Beach from Seattle in 2007, Don found the economic situation was rather dim.  When he was in high school, he had read Omni Magazine, which offered many innovative new technologies that made his imagination soar with endless possibilities.
Inspired, he decided to become proactive in energy . . .
