Program Manager's Message

Monday, February 28, marks the official launch of the Energy Upgrade California Program (EUC).  EUC ads will be on billboards, on the sides of buses and garbage trucks, on many English and Spanish speaking television and cable channels, on the radio, utility bill inserts, and, of course, our website.

Energy Upgrade California was borne from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and is an innovative program for homeowners to improve their home's energy efficiency, save water, lower utility bills and create a healthier and more comfortable home. Energy Upgrade California connects homeowners with participating contractors who have been pre-qualified and can help plan and complete their project, and with rebates and incentives to help pay for the upgrades.

Homeowners in Los Angeles County can also enter the $100,000 Home Energy Makeover Contest beginning on March 1.   See details below.  In the meantime, check our calendar for EUC workshops in your city during the remainder of February and March.

Of course, if you have further questions, please call SBESC staff at (310) 371-7222

Program Manager

We have a solution for that!   Come to a fun and free Ocean Friendly Garden Workshop presented by (G3) The Green Gardens Group, Surfrider Foundation, West Basin Municipal Water District,  and the South Bay Environmental Services Center.  Also offered is a follow-up hands-on workshop.

HHW Roundup

Sanitation Districts of LA County

Why are HHW Roundups Important?

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program gives Los Angeles County residents a legal and cost-free way to dispose of unwanted household chemicals that cannot be disposed of in their regular trash.

It is easy to participate.  Just put your items in a cardboard box and place the box in your trunk.  Most collections are drive-through so just pop your trunk and the box will be removed by collection agents, and you never have to worry about them again!

All electronic waste collected at HHW Roundups is sent to a facility within the State of California that certifies that it is 100% demanufactured and recycled in a stringent and environmetally acceptable manner to the commodity level in the United States. No Electronic Waste collected at these events is sent overseas.

Local Training for Green Construction Jobs

The Gateways to Green Building Pre-Apprenticeship Program offers South Bay residents exciting skills training for green job opportunities, and building employers the opportunity to tap into green building projects.  California's economy is "greening," and work on energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in residential construction is a large part of the expansion. The program is designed to prepare new workforce entrants, underemployed and unemployed South Bay workers for apprenticeships and employment in green building occupations.

Volunteer Spotlight
Tyler Dempsey

"If I could dedicate my life's work in an area and feel best about it, it would be to work on making positive environmental change, and preaching the good word to as many people who are willing to listen."  "It is not going to be easy, but the changes that need to be made are imperative to insure a bright future for generations to come."
