S/P2 Registered CCAR Achieves Record S/P2 Testing in September

More than 525,000 S/P2 tests are completed in September, and over 6 million online S/P2 tests have been taken since 2006

The Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair (CCAR) reports that record testing levels were achieved last month in its S/P2 (Safety and Pollution Prevention) e-learning program.

"We're grateful for the continued support that S/P2 receives from business owners and automotive instructors," said Daren Fristoe, CCAR President and Chief Operating Officer. "Working together, we continue to lift the industry's awareness of environmental and safety best practices."

Users at automotive repair businesses and students in automotive training programs at high schools, community colleges, career/technical schools, and other post-secondary institutions across the U.S., completed a total of 529,769 S/P2 tests in September, according to Fristoe. Since 2006, the S/P2 program has recorded more than 6.3 million tests taken.

Fristoe continued, "At a time when consumers are more mindful of a green and safe approach when they need automotive service, CCAR remains committed to providing real-time educational tools to meet the need of our end-users."

Kansas SBEAP Offers Free NESHAP Webinar
The Kansas Small Business Environmental Assistance Program (SBEAP) will be conducting a free Webinar on NESHAP for Paint Stripping and Miscellaneous Surface Coating Operations at Area Sources on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. CST.

This Webinar provides an overview of the 6H NESHAP (National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants) area source rule affecting paint stripping and miscellaneous surface coating operations at area sources. Facilities affected by this rule are required to be in compliance by January 10, 2011. This Webinar discusses requirements for compliance, with an emphasis on training.

This rule may apply to you if you:
  • use paints containing certain metals
  • use methlyene chloride for paint stripping
  • conduct painting on cars, trucks, truck trailers, cranes, bulldozers, recreational vehicles, boats and many other devices
Because this webinar is based on federal regulations, it is relevant for facilities in states beyond Kansas as well. To register, visit www.sbeap.org and look for the yellow box or call the Small Business Environmental Assistance Program (SBEAP) at 800-578-8898.

GL Shop LogoCCAR Adds Three Locations as "GreenLink Shops" in October

Three more auto repair facilities have received recognition as "GreenLink Shops" from the Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair (CCAR).

The GreenLink Shop status, an extension of CCAR's CCAR-GreenLink Environmental Compliance Assistance Center and S/P2 Safety and Pollution Prevention E-learning Program, is designed to promote consumer confidence in local automotive repair facilities' environmental/safety awareness and stewardship.

The new GreenLink Shops are:

  • Fort Washington Auto Body, Inc., Oxon Hill, Md.
  • Portsmouth Auto Body, Portsmouth, N.H.
  • Service King-Kingwood, Kingwood, Texas

"The addition of these three shops brings our total to 86 GreenLink Shops recognized since the program's introduction in January 2010," said Daren Fristoe, CCAR President and COO. "As more and more auto repair facilities incorporate environmental and safety stewardship in their business and marketing plans, we look forward to working with additional facilities in the coming months to promote the green, safe approach in their respective markets."

Repair facilities seeking the GreenLink Shop recognition must maintain high standards of excellence in environmental, health and safety (EHS) practices in four categories: business operations, employee training, safety compliance and environmental management. The CCAR initiative recognizes both auto service facilities and collision repair shops, with separate criteria established for each type of business.

SELF-INSPECTION

Conducting safety and health inspections at a business is the most widely accepted method to identify hazards. Why? The only way to be certain of an actual situation is to look at it directly from time to time.

Begin a program of self-inspection in your own workplace. Self-inspection is essential if you are to know where probable hazards exist and whether they are under control.

This month's article focuses on the following areas:
  • Spraying Operations
  • Environmental Controls
  • Flammable and Combustible Materials
