Greetings!

Our June newsletter is here, and we thank you for investing a few minutes of your time with it.

We're proud to feature Kadel's Auto Body this month, as the first multi-shop operator to receive CCAR's "GreenLink Shop" recognition for all its locations. You can find out more about the application process by clicking the link found at the bottom of the first article below.

Our annual participation is the SkillsUSA National Championships was again a rewarding experience for CCAR, to see demonstrated the increasing awareness of environmental and safety best practices among automotive students and their instructors. We salute the winners listed, as well as all the state champions who qualified for the AST competition.

Also, the latest installments in two important article series: on the EPA "Paint Rule," from Sue Schauls, CCAR's Technical Advisor, information regarding hands-on training for spray gun set-up; and the second of a series on the importance of safety self-inspections at your shop.

Kadel's Auto Body has received the "GreenLink Shop" recognition for all its locations, becoming the first multi-shop operator to earn this distinction from the Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair (CCAR®).

The GreenLink Shop status, an extension of CCAR's CCAR-GreenLink® Environmental Compliance Assistance Center and S/P2-Safety and Pollution Prevention E-learning Program, is designed to promote consumer confidence in local automotive repair facilities' environmental/safety awareness and stewardship.

In addition to its Beaverton, Ore., facility, which was recognized in April, these additional Kadel's Auto Body locations have now received the GreenLink Shop designation: Boise, Idaho; Clackamas, Ore.; Gresham, Ore.; Hillsboro, Ore.; Lake Oswego, Ore.; Portland, Ore.; Salem, Ore. (2); Tigard, Ore.; Tualatin, Ore.; and Vancouver, Wash.

"Kadel's Auto Body is committed to going above and beyond regulatory requirements in an ongoing effort to further decrease our overall carbon footprint," said Stephen Olson, the company's Safety and Environmental Manager.

"It is a phenomenal achievement for any automotive facility, be it collision repair or mechanical service, to be recognized as a GreenLink Shop," said CCAR's Chairman, Charles E. Ayers, Franchise Business Manager, Midas International Corporation. "I am very pleased to learn that we have our first multi-store operator to qualify for this recognition, a significant feat for this entrepreneur with 12 locations, as well as for CCAR itself."

SkillsUSA2010 SkillsUSA National Championships Feature S/P2 in  Automotive Service Technology Event
CCAR's "S/P2" e-learning program for Safety and Pollution Prevention had an active role in the SkillsUSA National Championships for the fifth consecutive year in 2010. Students taking part in the Automotive Service Technology (AST) competition earlier this month were tested in their knowledge of safety and environmental issues at a work station administered by CCAR staff members Jennifer Penland and Bob Stewart. Rod Enlow of the CCAR staff also served as a judge for the event.

SELF-INSPECTION

Conducting safety and health inspections at a business is the most widely accepted method to identify hazards. Why? The only way to be certain of an actual situation is to look at it directly from time to time.

Begin a program of self-inspection in your own workplace. Self-inspection is essential if you are to know where probable hazards exist and whether they are under control.

This month focuses on the following areas:
  • Employer Posting
  • Recordkeeping
  • Safety and Health Program
  • Medical Services and First Aid
  • Fire Protection
  • Personal Protection Equipment and Clothing

HVLP Paint Spray Gun Paint Rule: Provide Hands-on Training for Spray Gun Set-up
by Sue Schauls
CCAR Technical Advisor

The EPA's new Paint Rule governing the collision repair industry has several components with which to comply. The training requirement is beginning to raise concerns by shop owners and painters as to availability of compliant training programs. A recent EPA Webinar for trainers emphasized the hands-on component of the training material. Every training course should include an in-the-booth training module on spray gun set-up and paint training techniques. If the training program your shop took did not include a hands-on exercise, that portion of the training can be accomplished back at the shop under the supervision of a competent painter by practicing the spray gun set-up techniques in this article.

Employee Use of Company Autos
Courtesy of Zurich North America

"I wasn't driving too fast, that car just pulled out in front of me."

Countless employers have heard this story from an employee driving a company-owned vehicle that was just involved in an accident. If the accident occurred during work hours there are few questions and less reason for concern. It is after-hour and late-night accidents that cause the most anxiety for owners and management. "Who was driving my vehicle?" "Was alcohol involved?" "What time was it?"

Employee Actions, Management Responsibility
It is unfortunate but true; poor decisions by an employee can result in legal problems for your business. If an employee kills or injures someone while driving your vehicle, you may be held legally and financially responsible for the accident. If negligent entrustment can be proved, you may be held liable for damages awarded through legal action. This can include punitive damages, which may or may not be insurable in your particular jurisdiction.
