Identifying Safety & Health Hazards: Part 1
EPA Proposes to Streamline Approval Process for Fuel Conversion Systems
Greetings!

Thank you for taking a few minutes to review our May newsletter.

This month, you'll read about CCAR's opportunity to work with OSHA in providing access to our S/P2 "Mechanical Safety" course to all interested staff members of the agency.

We're also pleased to share with you the names of four more facilities that have been added to our roster of "GreenLink Shops." As more and more businesses consider the benefits of "green" and safe practices for their operations, we encourage you to click on the link found below to learn more about becoming a GreenLink Shop.

And finally, we begin a new series of articles on the importance of conducting safety self-inspections at your shop. While events like the recent "NAOSH Week" and June's "National Safety Month" are important, safety awareness must continue to be an everyday priority.

Regards,

DAREN FRISTOE
CCAR President & Chief Operating Officer
CCAR Offers S/P2 "Mechanical Safety"
Online Training to OSHA Staff

The Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair has announced that one of its "S/P2" (Safety and Pollution Prevention) e-learning courses for the auto repair industry is now available to staff members of the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

CCAR is making the S/P2 "Mechanical Safety" course available to all interested OSHA personnel through its participation in the "OSHA Alliance Program." Through the program, OSHA works with groups committed to safety and health, including businesses, trade or professional organizations, unions and educational institutions, to leverage resources and expertise to develop compliance assistance tools and resources and share information with employers and employees to help prevent injuries, illnesses and fatalities in the workplace.

"CCAR welcomes this opportunity to provide our S/P2 Mechanical Safety course to OSHA staff members," said Daren Fristoe, CCAR President and Chief Operating Officer. "Sharing information among OSHA personnel is a key part of our Alliance agreement, and we're pleased that CCAR's e-learning capability can assist in this effort."

Shops in California, Oregon and Pennsylvania Receive "GreenLink Shop" Recognition from CCAR

The Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair (CCAR) announces four additional facilities have been recognized as GreenLink Shops:

GL Shop LogoAlioto's Garage, San Francisco, Calif.
California Color Body & Paint, Chico, Calif.
Dutch Valley Auto Works, Lancaster, Pa.
Kadel's Body Shop, Beaverton, Ore.

The GreenLink Shop status, an extension of CCAR's CCAR-GreenLink Environmental Compliance Assistance Center and S/P2 (Safety and Pollution Prevention) E-learning Program, is designed to promote consumer confidence in local automotive repair facilities' environmental/safety awareness and stewardship.

"As the oldest family-owned collision repair facility in San Francisco, we have a
responsibility to our city as well as our neighbors, to ensure that we are not only the safest employer but one of the most environmentally responsible; the GreenLink Shop program proves that," said Andy Wernette, General Manager of Alioto's Garage.

"Everyone here at California Color is very excited and honored to be acknowledged by CCAR for our continuous efforts on behalf of the planet," said Rosie Vance, Manager of California Color Body & Paint.

"The environmental awareness I learned in the 1970's as a child is finally here to stay for all of us," said Geoff McCollom, President of Dutch Valley Auto Works, upon learning that his shop had received the GreenLink Shop recognition.

"Kadel's Auto Body has always been, and will always be, an industry leader
when it comes to 'green' initiatives," said Stephen Olson, Safety and Environmental
Manager for Kadel's. "This has been accomplished through the effort and dedication of our entire team, and Kadel's will continue to look for opportunities to raise our environmental and safety standards for the betterment of our employees, our community and our customers."

SELF-INSPECTION

Conducting safety and health inspections at a business is the most widely accepted method to identify hazards. Why? The only way to be certain of an actual situation is to look at it directly from time to time.

Begin a program of self-inspection in your own workplace. Self-inspection is essential if you are to know where probable hazards exist and whether they are under control.

Your self-inspections should cover safety and health issues in the following areas:
  • Building and Grounds Conditions
  • Housekeeping Program
  • Electricity
  • Lighting
  • Heating and Ventilation
  • Machinery
  • Personnel
  • Hand and Power Tools
  • Chemicals
  • Fire Prevention
  • Maintenance
  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
  • Transportation
  • First Aid Program/Supplies
  • Evacuation Plan

EPA logoEPA Proposes to Streamline Approval Process for Fuel Conversion Systems

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to make it easier for manufacturers to gain approval to sell fuel conversion systems. The conversion systems allow vehicles to run on alternative fuels, which may appeal to consumers concerned about energy security, fuel costs, or emissions. The proposal reflects EPA's interest in encouraging innovation and spurring conversions that use clean energy technologies.

Under the proposed approach, compliance requirements would vary based on age of the vehicle or engine being converted. EPA has found that the compliance process for older vehicles and engines could be streamlined, while maintaining environmental safeguards. As opposed to a one-size fits all approach, requirements would now be based on whether a vehicle or engine is deemed to be new, intermediate-age, or outside its expected useful life.

Conversion systems alter an existing vehicle or engine to enable it to run on a different type of fuel, such as switching a car to run on compressed natural gas. While properly engineered conversion systems can reduce or at least not increase emissions, poorly designed systems can lead to much more pollution. EPA reminds consumers only to use systems that have EPA approval.

EPA will accept public comments on this proposal until July 23, 2010. For more information: http://www.epa.gov/otaq/consumer/fuels/altfuels/altfuels.htm
