G&R Body and Paint of Sacramento Receives "GreenLink Shop" Recognition from CCAR

GL Shop LogoThe Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair (CCAR) announces that G&R Body and Paint of Sacramento, Calif., has been recognized as a "GreenLink Shop."

The GreenLink Shop status, an extension of CCAR's CCAR-GreenLink Environmental Compliance Assistance Center and S/P2 (Safety and Pollution Prevention) E-learning Program, is designed to promote consumer confidence in local automotive repair facilities' environmental/safety awareness and stewardship.

"Becoming a GreenLink Shop is exciting to us, and I am happy that we have achieved this status," said Dave Picton, owner of G&R Body and Paint. "It is important to me that we do the 'right thing' not only for the environment, but also for our employees and our community. As all of us go home to our families at night, it's important that we feel good about both the quality of our work and our role as good citizens; it's not just about bringing in the paycheck. That's why I make safety and environmental awareness a priority in my shop."

"We are excited to welcome G&R Body & Paint to the GreenLink Shop program," said Rod Enlow, CCAR Vice President of Industry Relations. "Today's retail customer is knowledgeable and enlightened with regard to environmental responsibility and safety awareness, and G&R's desire to attain this level of recognition should give their customers and insurance partners great satisfaction and confidence in this facility."

HVLP Paint Spray GunHVLP Gun Set-up: An Important Step
by Sue Schauls
CCAR Technical Advisor

The EPA's new Paint Rule governing the collision repair industry requires the use of High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) or other compliant technology paint spray guns.

Spray Gun Requirements for Reduced Air Emissions:

Use High Volume, Low Pressure (HVLP) spray guns to meet the Paint Rule requirements and to maximize spray paint efficiency. Good spray technique and the use of 65-percent-efficient HVLP guns have proven to reduce paint costs and improve finish quality.

Prior to HVLP guns, spray guns using air compressors did not have a way to regulate the air pressure coming through the gun. Material shot from the gun with such force produced problems, including large amounts of overspray and blowback. Overspray not only wastes material, but it requires more prep work to protect surrounding areas from paint. Blowback occurs when paint hits the surface so hard that it bounces off, leaving a disturbed surface that is not smooth and even. Delivering a high volume of product with low pressure solves these problems, saves money in material consumption and reduces air emissions.
