Greetings!

In our January newsletter, Daren Fristoe, CCAR's President and Chief Operating Officer, stated that users of the S/P2 e-learning program should expect new courses/content that reflect new technology. The new "Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles" module, added to our Safety courses, is our most recent example.

If recent months teach us anything, it is to be prepared for change: new technology, new approaches to operations, new regulations. CCAR and S/P2 strive to be of assistance to your operation in addressing the changing landscape of environmental and safety awareness.

Regards,

ROBERT G. STEWART
CCAR Executive Vice President

CCAR Introduces New S/P2 Module
for "Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles"
The Coordinating Committee for Automotive Repair (CCAR) has announced the expansion of its "S/P2" e-learning program to include a new Safety Course module on "Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles." The module is designed to provide service technicians with an awareness of regulations and safety procedures when repairing or servicing vehicles powered by Natural Gas (NGV) or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

"With the growing population of vehicles incorporating new technologies, such as CNG and alternative fuels, we want the S/P2 courses to address the corresponding environmental and safety issues that our subscribers will see in their shop and school settings," said Robert G. Stewart, CCAR Executive Vice President.

The module - available at no additional cost to users of three versions of the S/P2 "Safety" course: S/P2 for Mechanical Service, S/P2 for Collision Repair, and S/P2 for Heavy-Duty Fleets - covers Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations relating to NGV and CNG vehicles, proper identification of such vehicles, and safety hazards. It also outlines inspection requirements and rules for conversion systems.

Indiana Department of Environmental Management

Environmental protection in Indiana has come a long way since 1986, when the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) was established. Since then, IDEM has grown to a staff of 900, employing qualified engineers, scientists and environmental project managers specializing in air, land, pollution prevention and water quality issues.

The IDEM's Compliance and Technical Assistance Program (CTAP) is a non-regulatory program that provides free, confidential compliance and technical assistance to regulated entities. CTAP was established to help Indiana businesses achieve compliance with environmental regulations.

CTAP staff includes experts on air, water, and waste regulations, with knowledge about current environmental issues and new technologies. CTAP can assess the environmental compliance of a facility or help address concerns about a particular process or regulation. It also identifies pollution prevention opportunities that can move a business out of the regulatory loop or into a less burdensome regulatory process.

CTAP's online resources include:

Compliance Manual for Vehicle Maintenance Shops
Compliance Manual for Collision Repair and Automotive Refinishing Shops
Auto Salvage Facilities Manual
Waste Tire Haulers Sector Page

S/P2 Monthly Meeting Topic:
Workplace Vision Wellness Month
March 1-31 is "Workplace Eye Wellness Month," sponsored by Prevent Blindness America, the nation's oldest volunteer eye health and safety organization.

As health insurance costs continue to rise, employers are looking at ways to cut costs without cutting quality or access to care for their employees. Promoting eye health in particular, is crucial to ensuring that employers keep their health care costs down. The more vision ailments that employees have, the more medical care they utilize, which generates increased health-related expenditures for the employer. Prevention is one of the best ways to keep healthcare expenses down.

What is the best defense for you and your employees against an eye injury? There are three things you can do to help prevent an eye injury:
  • Know the eye safety dangers at work - complete an eye hazard assessment
  • Eliminate hazards before starting work. Use machine guarding, work screens, or other engineering controls
  • Use proper eye protection

Workplace Vision Wellness Month is an effort to educate companies and their employees on the importance of vision health, including warning signs of potential eye disease and safety tips on how to avoid vision-threatening eye accidents.  Prevent Blindness America has recently launched its Healthy Eyes Vision Wellness Program designed to help companies provide the tools employees need to protect their eye health.
