Greetings! Thanks for the many kind words about my December Newsletter. I will continue to make my newsletter interesting to distinguish it from all those painfully dull, pre-fab legal newsletters that I immediately file in a special folder on my computer titled "Trash!" Well the Virginia General Assembly finished up without having to go into overtime like last year. The major issue this year (which was also the issue Governor Tim Kaine seized on in winning his election) was transportation and the highways. There is agreement that it is a pressing issue, but the Republicans in the House of Delegates do not want to raise taxes and the Democrats don't want to fund the problem by taking money from state reserves. The bottom line- there will be even more emphasis on raising money by writing more speeding tickets! All those out-of-state motorists caught in Virginia's "Yankee Speed Traps" can't vote anybody out of office. |

It's the Internet, Knucklehead ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I know that the Clinton "War Room" had a famous
sign on its wall that said "It's the economy, stupid," but
my son, kindergartner Conor, told me that "We are not
allowed to say that word." Wow, if "stupid" gets you a
time out, I would already be on Death Row in Miss
Luck's kindergarten class!
The last BobBattleLaw.com Newsletter featured an article on my new website, which can be found online at, you guessed it, www.BobBattleL aw.com Bob Battle has multiple homes in cyberspace:
Virginia DUI Lawyer Blog I have recently switched my blog to ClarisLaw.com from Blogger.com. The blog has already received national attention and has received far more web traffic than I had anticipated. Some recent postings on the "Virginia DUI Lawyer" were about talking urinal cakes in bar bathrooms to combat DUI's and an Ohio appellate judge citing comedian Ron White in a DUI opinion. ("Clearly Bacher had the right to remain silent, but not the ability.") To visit this blog or to subscribe to it, click http://virgi niaduilawyer.clarislaw.com/
MySpaceComedy site MySpace is a social website offering an interactive, user-submitted network for friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music, and videos. MySpace has special categories for "Music" and "Comedy." MySpace's popularity is amazing:FACT: According to Wired magazine MySpace received more monthly pageviews than Google. Bob Battle has added a MySpaceComedy site that you can visit at ww w.BobBattleComedy.com. He has recently added a fourth video clip about "Lent." Also note that his "friends" are last Newsletter's featured comedian Jeff Caldwell & this month's featured folk singers, Antje Duvekot and Ellis Paul. I will keep you posted about my MySpace experience. I will write a future article about some of the bizarre people who have contacted me, including a 17 year- old "cyber heckler." The article already has a title- "Hey, hey, you, you, get off of MySpace!"
YouTube.com But wait, there's more. Bob Battle also has several videos on YouTube.com, including 2 of the comedy clips on his MySpace site plus a Volvo commercial starring Bob and a funny home video of Bob's cat, Shelby, swatting him in the rear as he walks by Shelby's chair. |

"Relentless Pursuit" -Sneak Preview of Most Highly Anticipated True Crime Book of 2007 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everyone who had the pleasure of watching him in the
courtroom knew that Kevin Flynn was an
outstanding
trial lawyer. In fact, he quickly rose to be chief of the
homicide section in the D.C. U.S. Attorney's office and
had an amazing string of convictions that led to him
being named that office's top trial lawyer. I knew that
Kevin was also an outstanding writer but he will now
have something other than Editor-in-Chief of the
Bishop Ireton High School "BI Word" at the top of
his
writing resume! The entire world is about to see
Kevin's amazing debut which has already become the
most highly anticipated true crime book of the year.
My good friend, Kevin Flynn has written a true crime
book to be released today (March 1, 2007) by the
major
publishing company G.P.Putnam's Sons. His book is
already getting rave reviews from the big
shots of this
genre Jonathan Harr (author of “A Civil
Action” -movie
starred John Travolta and Robert Duvall) ,
George
Pelecanos (best-selling crime novelist and
writer/producer of HBO’s “The Wire”) and
Ronald
Kessler (prolific writer with books about
the FBI, CIA,
Joseph Kennedy, the Bush administration, etc.),
to
name a few.
In two decades as a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C., Flynn has played a key role in the types of cases that make headlines and have come to dominate television's crime dramas. There was one case, however - the gruesome murder of a mother of six and one of her daughters in their own home in Washington - whose harsh reality he could never forget. In RELENTLESS PURSUIT, Flynn recounts how he partnered with an extraordinary team of police officers in two jurisdictions to bring a brutal killer to justice. RELENTLESS PURSUIT is the story of that journey to justice, an intensely gripping beat-by-beat reconstruction of the events as they unfold -- the murder, the arrest, the trial, the verdict -- told with astonishing candor, and providing a behind-the- scenes glimpse into the life of a dedicated prosecutor. Above all, it's about healing and community, a story in which, in the end, the system works and -- for once -- justice prevails. "RELENTLESS PURSUIT is everything you want in a true crime novel, but it's all true ... A page-turning read." -- Washingtonian, March 2007 About the Author- Kevin Flynn has been a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office since 1987 and recently served as chief homicide prosecutor. More importantly, he is godfather to Conor Battle and father of Bob Battle's godson, Connor Flynn. Because of my obvious inside connections, I was able to obtain a pre-release copy of this riveting thriller (feel free to use that quote, Kev!) and was able to work out a deal to offer the book for sale at a discount for all purchases at Amazon.com. Almost Famous: Singer Antje Duvekot ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My college roommate, Ralph Jaccodine, has become one of the country's most highly regarded music managers. His latest client is on the fast track to stardom. Her name is Antje Duvekot and I was able to see her amazing live performance at the Ashland Coffee & Tea House on February 15. Here is an excerpt from a review of her latest album, which you can purchase above: Just how good is Antje Duvekot? The Boston Globe picked Big Dream Boulevard as the #1 folk release of 2006, above Springsteen. I'm not sure how one could call either Duvekot or Springsteen folk, but who's to argue? The point is that Duvekot produced, with the help of Black Wolf's Ellis Paul and Ralph Jaccodine, a major league album which holds its own against and surpasses most of what is accepted as the cream of today's crop. And they did it alone, without the deep pockets which are seemingly at times the only thing keeping major labels major. God love the album that thrives on the strength of the music. Big Dream Boulevard does just that. A handful of critics have compared Duvekot to Dar Williams. Dave Marsh, former "Rolling Stone" guru, thinks Duvekot has it. Duvekot is, as Marsh says, "the whole package" and anyone who doesn't hear it one minute into the lead track, Dandelion, is stone cold. |

Folk Legend Ellis Paul at Ashland Coffee & Tea Saturday March 10#0000FF> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ralph Jaccodine's first client, Ellis Paul, has earned his reputation as one of the top singer/songwriters performing today. Although he has virtually owned the folk music category in the Boston Area Music Awards for over a decade, he now lives in Crozet, Virginia. Ellis Paul is a treat to watch live as he shares interesting and amusing anectdotes about his brilliant songs. Ellis will be headlining at the Ashland Coffee & Tea House on Saturday, March 10. To purchase tickets online, cl ick here. You can also purchase above Ellis Paul's new, greatest hits release, "Essentials," which contains 32 outstanding tracks. Here is an excerpt from an album review: Ellis Paul is one of the best singer/songwriters of his generation. And for many of us he is the face of contemporary folk music—few are as smart, as literate and as poetic as Paul. He has spun his story songs for nearly twenty years now, and has eleven studio recordings (with an additional two early recordings on cassette—now available on CD) to his credit. I cannot think of another artist on the acoustic music scene who is better-loved by fans, or more respected by his contemporaries. I suspect that turning forty, having a child and putting down roots all had something to do with Paul's taking a look back at his body of work in the newly released Essentials. While Paul's 2000 Live recording captured Ellis Paul the live performer, 2006's Essentials captures Ellis Paul the artist. Essentials presents the richness, the range and the beauty of Paul's work in a double CD package. Ralph Jaccodine, Paul's longtime manager and friend, is named as executive producer. He successfully pulls together the many strands of Paul's career here. There are thirty-two songs in all—many are the originals available on earlier recordings. But this is not simply a "best of" recording. The bonuses include two new songs and eight new versions of his classic tunes, some recorded live. Putting all of the assessments aside for a moment, what impresses most is the stunning beauty of Ellis Paul's art. Just listening to the music and taking it all in - you become swept away by the songs and immersed in the stories they tell. |

Bob Battle Bobblehead Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you can see, a final design has been approved and
I am expecting the Bob Battle Bob-L-Head any day. I
hope to have one in hand to present to Ellis Paul on
March 10.
I love the Bob-L-Head design but my wife hates it- she thinks the nose on it is huge. I told her that it was a bobblehead; a caricature- it's not supposed to be a sculpture or fitting for Mt. Rushmore or the monuments they will someday erect to me along the D.C. Tidal Basin and Monument Avenue in Richmond. Anyway, always the trial lawyer, I settled the dispute over the Bob-L-Head once and for all by calling to my lap, my star witness, 21 month-old Emmett Battle. I showed Emmett the photo of the bobblehead and asked him, "Who's that?" He immediately responded, "Daddy!" The defense rests! Thank you to all of you wonderful people who have referred clients to me. I haven't forgotten about you. Let's just say there could be a bobblehead in your near future. Feel free to forward this to anyone you know who would be interested in any or all of the topics covered this month.
