Ethical Living
Making choices that reflect your values

"Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do." Potter Stewart

We like this quote, but in reality most of the time - really, nearly all of the time - most people know what they ought to do -

they just have trouble actually doing it.

Youth Program
Students raise their hands to show they know the right answer.

All of us have struggled figuring out the "right" decision to make at some point in our lives, but typically that's because the "right" decision isn't the easiest or most convenient one to make.

For example, you've already committed to going to dinner with your boring Uncle Joe when you get a dinner invitation from a fun friend who's in town for just one night. Do you ditch Uncle Joe? (You don't really have to answer that question - we won't judge you!)

Obviously, this is a very simple and relatively unimportant example of an ethical decision. The consequences either way aren't life-threatening or life-changing. Yet, if we consistently make unethical choices in situations like these, chances are we'll make unethical choices when it comes to much more important issues as well.

Much research has been done about ethical decision-making especially as it relates to educating youth because increased antisocial behavior among youth indicates a lack of ethical behavior that is leading to many preventable tragedies (e.g. the U.S. has the highest rate of incarceration in the world) in our society. (Click here to read an interesting article about ethics in education.)

That is why Peace Learning Center uses a holistic approach that goes beyond simply telling people what decisions are the "right" ones to makeby providing support and teaching skills which make it easier to lead an ethical life.

Volunteering to Help Students Become Ethical Adults

We always need more caring people to help us do this important work. Research consistently shows that having positive role models can make all the difference in the world in helping young people mature into ethical adults.

Ethics in the Workplace

Jerry Jones - April Leadership Series Facilitator
Jerry Jones,
President & CEO of Cannon IV, Inc.

Unethical decisions in the workplace occur for many reasons. Sometimes people make unethical choices because there is not clarity around what the "right" choice or decision might be. Misguided loyalty is another reason for unethical conduct on the job. Often, ethical problems are complicated and the proper choice may not be obvious.

If you would like to learn more about ethical decision-making, plan to attend our April 10th Leadership Series event, "Utilizing Your Company Values to Support Ethical Business Decisions", led by our guest facilitator, Jerry Jones.

During this highly interactive session, you will...

  • Examine real-life business situations
  • Learn ways to address behavior that may border on unethical practices
  • Discover how leaders in some companies have chosen to address these behaviors by leaning back on their company values

Register today if you'd like support in your quest to lead an ethical life.

Kimber
Bishop-Yanke,
Founder of Girls and Boys Empowered shared her expertise in anti-bullying education during a powerful workshop at Peace Learning Center earlier this month.

Kids Empowered has provided empowerment programs for more than 65,000 students since 1998.

Peace Learning Center hosted the workshop as part of our efforts to become a regional center for excellence in anti-bullying education.

Peace Learning Center is creating the center due to the increased need for anti-bullying education in our community.  We recognize bullying education is not a one size fits all solution because different schools have different needs. Our goal is to bring together and evaluate the "best of the best" to provide practical resources for schools and parents who want to do more to make sure their children can safely learn and grow while they are in their care.

Is bullying a problem at your child's school?

So far, 91% of our respondents have said, "Yes." Sadly, 15% have also said their child's school is not a safe place for learning.

Take our short Bullying Survey for Parents and add your voice.

Tim's Peace Tip

PLC Co-founder Executive Director

Recently Peace Learning Center hosted seven women from Syria who were on a US State Department sponsored visit to experience American democracy with visits to Washington DC, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City and other destinations.  They loved the nature and environment of Eagle Creek Park and Indianapolis.

In our discussions about trying to be a peacemaker, I was challenged by a participant who asked if you can work for peace if the other person is unwilling?

Interesting things happen when you try to be a peacemaker.  Sometimes people who seem to agree with you truly don't but will not express their true thoughts.  Those who may question your hypothesis or want to further discuss may be closer to your thinking than you realize.  Also, never doubt the power of your words and convictions if they are based on truth, respect and love.  While some may ardently oppose what you say, no one knows what happens after the discussion when that person has time to reflect on your point of view.

Peace always begins with just one person and then spreads to others.  Someone must take the initiative.

In my opinion, the saddest stories are about family members and loved ones who cannot get past a long ago perceived slight or conflict never to talk again.  Siblings, parents, and neighbors passing away without making peace.

We are all on a journey and must first find our personal power.  What do you believe in and drives you to make the most out of your life?  Our personal power is directly proportional to the amount of stress we allow into our lives.  Anger helps us change injustice - but it does not work to address daily stressors that we do not control.

Once we find our personal power, we can solidify our ethical approach to life that centers on integrity - building trust and respect to work on a team and get along with others to co-create.

This is how our country is successful.  One of our Syrian friends said, "Before I came to America, I thought this country was great because its government must do a lot for its people.  After being here awhile, I realize it is great because citizens and nonprofits are addressing its problems with help from the government."
