PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
Youth Services
Peace Learning Center's Youth Services team is preparing for an exciting 2011-2012 school year. We're looking forward to serving young people throughout Indianapolis, from pre-school students at St. Mary's Child Center to juniors at Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School. In all the work we do, from schools to afterschool programs (like our new partnership with AYS this year), we focus on three key skills: emotional management, healthy communication, and collaborative problem-solving. These three skill sets are what allow young people and adults to manage conflict in healthy ways, and they also empower individuals to be responsible and respectful.

International Interfaith Initiative
Despite the heat, III has been busy with a variety of fun and educational programs over the past month. Our Community Fair was a great success with the opening of Asrar Burney's America the Beautiful photography exhibit, the international barbeque contest and a variety of activities for children. On July 14th we hosted an exciting trip to Chicago with several Iraqi refugee families. The trip included a sumptuous meal at Salam Café, shopping at Middle Eastern groceries and a visit to Grant Park.
 | | Visit to Grant Park |
This was the first vacation and trip outside of Central Indiana for most of these families. And our Youth Camp, July 18-22nd, was a wonderful opportunity for students to share and learn about the many cultures and traditions that enrich our community. Students made spring rolls from Vietnam, learned dances from Zimbabwe and Iraq, tried using chopsticks, made piñatas, wrote their names in Arabic, and practiced extending greetings in several languages. Throughout the week they visited the Indianapolis Museum of Art galleries and went hiking in the Art Park, and they toured Butler University and went swimming in the new recreation complex. Students also learned about the many religious and community organizations sharing the Interchurch Center with presentations from Sierra Club, Jewish Community Relations Council, Muslim Alliance, and the Study Abroad program.
Journey Through the Middle East at Marion County Public Library
Throughout the fall months III is partnering with Indianapolis Marion County Public Library to celebrate the beautiful cultural and religious traditions of the Middle East with over 100 workshops and events. Click here for a printable brochure with a list of the workshops and stay tuned for upcoming events including an opening reception on the International Day of Peace, September 21st, at Central Library with a performance by the Yuval Ron Ensemble!

Volunteer Opportunities
There's a new opportunity for you to help children in Indianapolis - Peace Coaches. We are recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with students building conflict management and emotional literacy that will benefit them in the classroom, neighborhood and future.
As a Peace Coach you will lead small groups of elementary or high school students through an interactive and highly participatory curriculum. Teams of volunteers visit a classroom for six 1 ½ hour sessions after receiving a two hour orientation.
This new offering allows Peace Learning Center to bring professionals into classrooms, offering students real-world perspectives on the value of critical communication skills and civility. It also allows the volunteer to learn healthy communication skills that will be an asset in the home and workplace. Peace Coaches was piloted this spring with five attorneys from the Indianapolis Bar Association leadership program at Shortridge Magnet High School. Teacher Mary Nolan said her students benefited greatly through the work of caring adults.
In addition to Peace Coaches, Peace Learning Center volunteer opportunities include:
- Corporate and Community events - Help us with our Tuesdays @ PLC and other events while learning.
- Landscaping and beautification at PLC Eagle Creek Park - Maintain historic building and grounds.
- Shout Out Crew - Publicize PLC through email and social media.
- Office and Clerical

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Recently I read an article in Indianapolis Monthly about Ruth Lilly's driver, Phil Milby. He told a wonderful tale of how he spent many hours driving Ms. Lilly through our city visiting her favorite places over a thirty year stretch.
One of those places she loved to visit was Eagle Creek Park where her dad, J.K. Lilly, Jr. held over 3,000 acres that included a farming operation, his own personal library (today's Ornithology Center), and the Eagles' Crest Estate - his former house where Peace Learning Center is located.
Reading about Ms. Lilly driving around town on regular basis in a dark blue Lincoln Continental makes me wonder if that was one of the cars that regularly did a loop in our parking lot.
Contrary to past media reports about her health and mental state, Ms. Lilly's driver says that to almost the end of her life she made all decisions about her philanthropy and business affairs listening and asking questions about each proposal and deciding yes or no on everything.
I never got the honor of meeting Ruth Lilly. Ever since Peace Learning Center started getting an annual donation from her in 2003, I've wondered if Ms. Lilly actually knew what we were up to in her family's former house. After reading Mr. Milby's account of her affairs, it warmed my heart to learn that a person who probably spent many hours in Peace Learning Center's building knew and supported the work we do for Indianapolis children and families. Though Ms. Lilly passed away a few years ago, Peace Learning Center continues to receive support from what is now the Ruth Lilly Foundation to this day.
