PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
K-12 Programs
As Peace Learning Center's youth services team prepares for summer, we are also tying up all our loose ends from the 2010-2011 school year. In addition to restocking supplies and saying goodbye to students, our team has been compiling student surveys.

We love hearing what our students think of our programs, because the youth we serve are our priority. To honor their hard work and their thoughtful words, we'd like to share a few students' responses to one question -- Describe one thing you learned how to improve or develop through the Peace Learning Center Program?
- To not bully people and relationships with boyfriend/girlfriend.
- To listen to people when they have a problem.
- I learned I have to have patience.
- I have learned how to stop conflicts.
- Not judge somebody by the way they look and get to learn about them before being mean.
- One thing I learned is respect comes from many different ways, but it's up to me to keep it that way.
If you would like more information about Peace Learning Center, scheduling programming or having an organizational needs assessment, please contact Youth Services Director Kirsten Eamon-Shine.
Corporate & Community Programs
Peace Learning Center's Corporate & Community Programs has had

Dr. Kent Keith conducting a servant leadership session | a wonderful season with our publicly offered programs. We have been pleased to present a wide array of topics during our Tuesdays at PLC sessions which ranged from understanding organizational culture to ethical leadership to influencing people who resist change to looking at conflict as an opportunity for learning. In addition, we offered half-day sessions which included our 2nd Annual Central Indiana Board Chair Summit (which once again sold out this year!) along with our session on Servant Leadership: An Ethical, Practical & Meaningful Approach to Work and Rebuilding Trust: Creating a Culture of Candor.
We have partnered with some fantastic organizations including The Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, Lacy Leadership Association, Turning Point Consulting, Cannon IV, Purdue Extension, Marion County, uLead, Woodward-Duncan Consulting and Harrison College. We look forward to partnering with many of these businesses and organizations in the coming year.
We also want to thank our PLC associate consultants who provide learning and development focused on healthy organizational practices in the areas of Leadership Development, Diversity/Inclusion and Healthy Communication:
Kara Endsley
Tamyra Freeman
Debra J. Jarvis
Pam Larkey
McKenzie Scott Lewis
George Okantey
Richard W Smith
Over the next month or so we will be working on our calendar for next season's publicly offered leadership development sessions which will begin again in September and we have a couple of exciting new programs and projects that we will offer in late fall. We'll keep you posted on our new developments!

International Interfaith Initiative
As our world continues to become more interconnected it feels even more important for us to get know one another across national, ethnic and religious boundaries. International Interfaith Initiative participated in two wonderful events in April that gave our community an opportunity to celebrate our diversity and express a common desire for peace, security, and a better understanding (see below). We are also exited to host our first Youth Camp, July 18-23, with facilitators from around the globe. Click here for a description and/or a registration form if you know of students between the ages of 8 and 14 who would like to participate.
| | Religious Leaders at City-wide Prayer Rally |
On Thursday April 19th III helped to organize the second annual City Wide Prayer Rally hosted by Douglas Hairston in the Mayor's Office. The event took place on the steps of the Indiana War Memorial and it was very inspiring to hear representatives from Central Indiana's many ethnic and religious communities share prayers and words of encouragement for a better future. Mayor Ballard reiterated his call for a truly international city and representatives from our Sister City programs shared prayers in their native languages of German, Italian, Hindu, Mandarin, Portuguese (Brazil), Taiwanese and Slovenian. Religious leaders from sixteen congregations shared beautiful messages of peace and solidarity as they prayed for our youth, government leaders, security, and collective well being. It was a marvelous example of the world that we are all striving toward!
And on May 14th III worked with our local Ahmiddiya Muslim Community to host a "Muslims for Loyalty" discussion and dinner at the Indiana Interchurch Center. The event was attended by over 100 people and it created a lot of goodwill. The keynote speaker was the National Vice President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Naseem Mahdi and included a panel of community leaders including representatives from Senator Lugar and Congressman Carson's Offices, the FBI, and local law enforcement. Honorable Naseem Madhi and Dr. Frank Straub |
Safety, shared a very heartfelt story of his experience at the Twin Towers on 9-11. Dr. Straub spoke about a Muslim medical student who went directly to the towers after hearing about the attack and lost his life attempting to assist others. The panel discussion was followed by a frank question and answer period before we all shared a lovely dinner prepared by the Ahmadiyya community. It was a wonderful opportunity for our community to learn and share in the spirit of fellowship and understanding.
Here is another opportunity for you and your family to have fun and get to know your international neighbors: Pakistan American Day at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on Saturday July 16, 2011 beginning at 4:00 pm. Click here for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities
There's a new opportunity for you to help children in Indianapolis - Peace Coaches. We are recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with students building conflict management and emotional literacy that will benefit them in the classroom, neighborhood and future.
As a Peace Coach you will lead small groups of elementary or high school students through an interactive and highly participatory curriculum. Teams of volunteers visit a classroom for six 1 ½ hour sessions after receiving a two hour orientation.
This new offering allows Peace Learning Center to bring professionals into classrooms, offering students real-world perspectives on the value of critical communication skills and civility. It also allows the volunteer to learn healthy communication skills that will be an asset in the home and workplace. Peace Coaches was piloted this spring with five attorneys from the Indianapolis Bar Association leadership program at Shortridge Magnet High School. Teacher Mary Nolan said her students benefited greatly through the work of caring adults.
In addition to Peace Coaches, Peace Learning Center volunteer opportunities include:
- Corporate and Community events - Help us with our Tuesdays @ PLC and other events while learning.
- Landscaping and beautification at PLC Eagle Creek Park - Maintain historic building and grounds.
- Shout Out Crew - Publicize PLC through email and social media.
- Office and Clerical

FROM THE DIRECTOR
For our fourteen years of existence, Peace Learning Center's board members, staff and volunteers make us a critical community institution because of their hard work and dedication. We have some changes I'd like to share.
We have three new members of PLC Board of Directors: Annie Christ-Garcia - Marion County Superior Court Judge, Fanchon Stinger - Fox 59 News Anchor, and Adam Weber - SpinWeb Director of Business Development. Patti Ayars fulfilled her term of service and we thank her for her dedication and help.
Peace Learning Center recently hired new youth development facilitators, Jay Patterson and Ieshia Webster for our youth programs. Both come with great experiences engaging youth and they are already busy with our summer programs.
After nearly six years of excellent service, Gina Woods our development director is moving on to new horizons. Everyone at PLC will miss Gina's enthusiasm and good works. We thank her for all she accomplished.
John McShane, a long-time volunteer and board member with extensive corporate and organizational development experience, has joined our staff to take on the development duties.
Our Peace Learning Center community welcomes new board members and staff. We also sincerely thank all who have served for their passion, service and good works.
