PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Students arriving at PLC | K-12 Programs
As the 2010-2011 school year closes and Peace Learning Center prepares for summer programs, our youth services team is also looking forward to the coming academic year. In addition to taking reservations for summer camp and camp staff training services, we are also seeking new school partners for the coming academic year. If you would like more information about Peace Learning Center, scheduling programming or having an organizational needs assessment, please contact Youth Services Director Kirsten Eamon-Shine.
Peace Learning Center's programs provide youth and adults involved in their lives with engaging opportunities to gain new communication, conflict management and emotional literacy skills. Our programs help people to change, for the better. As one of our recent student participants said when asked if she might recommend the program to others, "Yes. They could have low self esteem or like to bully people and they might change their self around and make better choices!"

| | April Tuesdays at PLC session |
"The Power of Renewal" Presenter: Richard W Smith
Registration Fee: $5.00
Time: 8:30am - 10:00am
Location: Peace Learning Center in Eagle Creek Park
Session Description: Many of us are addicted to and depleted by speed, busyness, distraction, noise, and shallowness. At any given moment we may make choices that deplete ourselves Physically, Intellectually, Emotionally and/or Spiritually. If our nurturing is not equal to or greater than our depleting behaviors then over time the price we pay will be great - we may end up with little or no passion for our work and perhaps even for our lives. During this brief session we will explore both depletion and nurturance and provide an opportunity for you to affirm, if not reaffirm, your commitment to your own renewal. Register here

Session Description: In this session Dr. Keith will share the ways in which servant leadership is ethical, practical, and meaningful. Dr. Keith will discuss the meaning of the Paradoxical Commandments that he wrote and published in 1968, which subsequently traveled around the world and have been used by millions of people. The session includes active learning for participants, opportunities for questions, and group discussion. Each participant will receive a copy of Dr. Keith's book, The Case for Servant Leadership, to use as a handbook during the session. The registration fee of $49 is tax-deductible - all proceeds will be invested in Peace Learning Center youth programs.

International Interfaith Initiative
International Interfaith Initiative had a busy and exciting month of April. It began with a

delightful dinner to close our semester-long program that brought Butler students together with Iraqi refugee families living in Central Indiana. In mid April we hosted the opening for A Light in the Middle East: Photographs of Dr. Mark David Pescovitz (1955-2010) at the Interchurch Art Gallery. The opening was a poignant tribute and celebration of Dr. Pescovitz's life with a beautiful gathering of friends, family and colleagues who have all been inspired by this great man. On April 21st we hosted a luncheon with a unity and reconciliation delegation from Rwanda that was here to commemorate the heinous genocide that took place in that country 17 years ago. And on April 30th we made excellent progress on our environmental project by assisting members of the Interchurch Center, Ball State students, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful with the installation of over 1,000 indigenous plant and trees that will make our landscaping into an environmental and wildlife friendly sanctuary for many years to come. Please stop by our offices at 1100 W. 42nd St. to view the Light in the Middle East exhibit, check out the new landscaping, and see the solar panels installed on the roof of the front walkway as they produce clean energy for the building.
In May we are cosponsoring an important discussion at the Interchurch Center titled "American-Muslim Community Stands Up For Loyalty to their Country" on Saturday May 14th at 5pm. The keynote speaker will be Mr. Naseem Mahdi, National Vice President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Admission is free of charge and a delicious dinner will be served. Email Uniqah Muzaffar for a reservation: uniqah_muzaffar@hotmail.com or call 317-207-0260. Please plan to arrive by 4:45 pm and the event will start promptly at 5pm. We are also cosponsoring a Citywide Prayer Rally organized by the Mayor Ballard's Office and the Front Porch Alliance that is scheduled for Thursday May 19th from 11:30-1:00pm on the north side of the Indiana War Memorial. The theme for this year's rally is to recognize and lift up our local international community in prayer and celebration.
Finally we'd like to share more information about the Center for Interfaith Cooperation (CIC) Youth Summer Camp scheduled from July 18-22 at the Indiana Interchurch Center. Students, ages 8-14, will engage in a variety of intercultural activities with facilitators from Vietnam, Zimbabwe, Jordan, Pakistan, Iraq, Sudan and Japan. We will also visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the outdoor Art Park, Butler University and each day students will participate in a fun nature exploration hike. Camp will be held Monday July 18 through Friday July 22 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (before and after care will be available from 8-9 am and 4-5pm for an additional $10). The cost is $125 per student for the full week with a $25 discount for additional children. You can also schedule individual days for $30 and scholarships are available.
CIC Youth Camp will be led by Keith and Brenda Turner who have combined experience of over 20 years in positive youth development programs. Keith and Brenda will be assisted by four trained camp counselors and a staff member from CIC will introduce a different international theme each day. During the week students will learn simple greetings and how to write their name in five different languages. They will also learn basic cultural, geographic and demographic information about each the countries introduced. In addition students will visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art each day to view artwork from each of the countries or regions that are being studied. Other activities will include arts and crafts projects, nature hikes, and a tour of Butler University. Snacks that compliment the international theme will be provided each day however students must bring their own lunches.
Registration forms will be available on May 10 by emailing Charlie at charlie@centerforinterfaithcooperation.org or call (317) 318-5304

Volunteer Opportunities
There's a new opportunity for you to help children in Indianapolis - Peace Coaches. We are recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with students building conflict management and emotional literacy that will benefit them in the classroom, neighborhood and future.
As a Peace Coach you will lead small groups of elementary or high school students through an interactive and highly participatory curriculum. Teams of volunteers visit a classroom for six 1 ½ hour sessions after receiving a two hour orientation.
This new offering allows Peace Learning Center to bring professionals into classrooms, offering students real-world perspectives on the value of critical communication skills and civility. It also allows the volunteer to learn healthy communication skills that will be an asset in the home and workplace.
Peace Coaches was piloted this spring with five attorneys from the Indianapolis Bar Association leadership program at Shortridge Magnet High School. Teacher Mary Nolan said her students benefited greatly through the work of caring adults.
In addition to Peace Coaches, Peace Learning Center volunteer opportunities include: - Corporate and Community events - Help us with our Tuesdays @ PLC and other events while learning.
- Landscaping and beautification at PLC Eagle Creek Park - Maintain historic building and grounds.
- Shout Out Crew - Publicize PLC through email and social media.
- Office and Clerical

FROM THE DIRECTOR
Good relationships make good education - and bad relationships make for inferior education. Think back to your school experience. Teachers who cared about you and showed interest in you are the ones you probably remember the most.
It is very inspirational to see when education works. Teachers who engage students and challenge them with high expectations seem to be successful because youth rise to the expectations given to them.
Making excuses by blaming parents, neighborhoods or their non-compliance with adult expectations does not work.
Successful schools also know service is a path to peace and educational experiences that build community and positive relationships.
We at Peace Learning Center work to be catalysts for service in schools and community.
Our programs build teams of youth facilitators who teach their peers and younger students emotional management and problem-solving skills.
We help youth become peer mediators who sit down with two youth in conflict and help them manage their differences and find common ground.
Our Peace Coaches are adult volunteer small group facilitators who serve in a classroom setting where they return for four to six weeks while teaching and learning about youth.
My dream is to see the same hope and commitment to education I see in first graders last all the way through high school and that service and learning becomes a lifetime commitment.
That way it will be everyone's responsibility to rid the world of ignorance, disease and misunderstanding so that we may someday reach our ideals of freedom, liberty and justice.
Where does this start? In each and every one of us and the good news is you can join us right now.
Click on Peace Learning Center to volunteer and help financially to fulfill our vision of a community of peace where respect is primary and justice is real.
