PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT K-12 Programs
The Youth Services team at Peace Learning Center continues to provide the Peace School program this spring, revisiting several schools and launching programs at new sites, too. Through the Peace School program, schools participate in a universal intervention, with students, staff and parents learning more about managing conflict in a healthy way. With developmentally appropriate sessions that complement state educational standards, each student expands their ability to manage their emotions, communicate in a healthy way and work collaboratively with peers and adults. The best part of the experience is that - for both children and adults - the sessions are hands-on, providing fun, engaging and honest opportunities to explore these critical skill sets.
If you'd like to find out more about bringing the Peace School program or any Peace Learning Center services to the young people you know, contact Kirsten Eamon-Shine at keamon-shine@peacelearningcenter.org

 | | Jerry Jones Ethical Leadership session |

Below are our professional development sessions for January. We hope you can attend!
"Conflict: An Opportunity for Learning" Tuesday January 11, 2011
8:30am - 10:00am
Location: Peace Learning Center
Presenter: George Okantey
Register here
Session Description: We waste a lot of time and human capital in conflict avoidance. In most organizations people struggle to speak up to their colleagues about their concerns, often resulting in resource sapping and avoidance tactics, such as complaining, getting angry, doing unnecessary work and avoiding the other person altogether. Imagine the cost to your organization? This workshop will examine the mental models that we use to organize our environment, and reinforce the need to embrace conflict as an opportunity for learning. We will explore the pros and cons of unilateral and mutual learning models and then discuss the key elements of conflict. Class discussions will focus on positive aspects of conflict, its causes and warning signs, including common misconceptions about conflict. The second part of the workshop will focus on using effective problem solving techniques that result in constructive outcomes. Finally, participants will practice these skills on an issue with which they have conflict.

International Interfaith Initiative
Each year the New Year brings paradoxical emotions. Some greet the event with revelry while others are more melancholy and there is renewed hope but a tinge of apprehension about what the future offers. It brings to mind the parable about our dual nature represented by a greed and concern- the one that we feed is the one that prevails. Here at III we look forward to many good things in 2011 however we are also extremely concerned. Concerns that include the state of our environment, violence directed at Christians in the Middle East, anti-immigrant sentiments here in the US and the growing disparity between the haves' and have not's all over the world. As we continue to struggle with these and many other issues as we will look for creative opportunities to come together-across religious, ethnic and cultural barriers- to seek effective solutions, celebrate what is good about our diverse traditions and increase our understanding and respect for the "other" in the process. We hope to see you in 2011; below are a few events that can help you become more engaged.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration "Our Beloved Community Festival"Saturday, January 15 from 11:00 - 3:00 pm at Christian Theological Seminary (CTS). PLC hosts a variety of family friendly activities to enjoy and III is partnering with Latino Youth Collective to facilitate a public discussion about immigration policy from 1:00-2:30.
On Friday January 28th from 7:30 - 9:00 pm at Ball State University Rabbi Lew Weiss, Imam Mikal Saahir and Reverend David Berry will join III director Charlie Wiles to recount their interfaith trip to Middle East.
OBAT Helpers is a partner at Center for Interfaith Cooperation and a refugee support organization assisting over 250,000 people in Bangladesh. President and CEO Anwar Kahn just returned from a trip there and he will share the latest information about the excellent work they are accomplishing on Saturday February 5th from 4:00-7:00 pm in the dinning room at the Interchurch Center.
And on Thursday Feb. 17th from 4-6pm III is cosponsoring a Women's Conference: You've Come a Long Way Baby?, an event that will explore perceptions, images, and clothing of women of faith whiles consider the evolution of the women's movement with a diverse panel of religious and community leaders.
More information about these events is on our website at www.internationalinterfaith.org
We would also like to encourage everyone to explore the diverse variety of rich learning opportunities offered by the Faith Learning Initiative at CTS: http://www.cts.edu/academics/lifelong-learning.
And finally we ask each of you to look for opportunities to reach out to neighbors and learn about communities that are less familiar. Recently the United Nations unanimously passed a resolution declaring the first week in February World Interfaith Harmony Week. Please visit www.worldinterfaithharmonyweek.com to learn how you and your community can get involved. And Happy New Year!

Volunteer Opportunities
There's a new opportunity for you to help children in Indianapolis - Peace Coaches. We are recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with students building conflict management and emotional literacy that will benefit them in the classroom, neighborhood and future.
As a Peace Coach you will lead small groups of elementary or high school students through an interactive and highly participatory curriculum. Teams of volunteers visit a classroom for six 1 ½ hour sessions after receiving a two hour orientation.
This new offering allows Peace Learning Center to bring professionals into classrooms, offering students real-world perspectives on the value of critical communication skills and civility. It also allows the volunteer to learn healthy communication skills that will be an asset in the home and workplace. Peace Coaches was piloted this spring with five attorneys from the Indianapolis Bar Association leadership program at Shortridge Magnet High School. Teacher Mary Nolan said her students benefited greatly through the work of caring adults.
In addition to Peace Coaches, Peace Learning Center volunteer opportunities include: - Corporate and Community events - Help us with our Tuesdays @ PLC and other events while learning.
- Landscaping and beautification at PLC Eagle Creek Park - Maintain historic building and grounds.
- Shout Out Crew - Publicize PLC through email and social media.
- Office and Clerical
