Exploring emotions at PLC

K-12 Programs

In this season of sharing, community and peaceful hopes, Peace Learning Center's Youth Services team would like to share some simple practices that support our Pillars of Peace in your life and in the lives of young people you know.

1. Peace Breaths are a simple skill that kids in our program use to calm themselves down and to transition from active to contemplative tasks. Just breathe in for a count of five, pause, and breathe out for a count of seven. Notice how you feel and repeat, as necessary. This practice supports emotional management, our first Pillar of Peace.

2.  Sharing gratitude is a great way to build community, empathy and appreciation in your life. Take a moment to let a family member, colleague or friend know what is special about him and the impact he has on your life or in the world.  This practice supports healthy communication, our second Pillar of Peace.

3.  Work with others in your life to provide a special gift - of your time and your talents - to a cause that matters to you. Invite people who are close to you to share in identifying and sharing this gift. This practice supports collaborative problem solving, our third Pillar of Peace.

Thank you for all you do, in the big and the little ways, to help young people find peace and meaning in their lives. Hopefully, these simple practices can extend those efforts just a little bit.

An Emerging Community: A banner year for interfaith efforts in Central Indiana

Please plan to join us this Saturday December 11, 2010 at the Indiana Interchurch Center for a fun, informative and delicious celebration of Zimbabwean culture.  International Interfaith Initiative is sponsoring this eventheadling_friends_photo with Healing Friends Foundation which supports micro-finance projects and builds relationship with Hoosiers and this beautiful yet extremely challenged Sub-Saharan African country.  Learn more and register on our website at www.internationalinterfaith.org

It has been a busy and gratifying year for International Interfaith Initiative and November was an exemplary month.  On November 5th III held its 4th annual conference Interfaith Peacebuilding: Global and Local Perspectives. This year we partnered with Indiana University School of Social Work to plan and implement the conference which provided meaningful opportunities for learning and growth.  Weaving the strengths of academia and the faith community is not a simple task but certainly well worth the benefits if we can authentically infuse the motivation of faith into programs that effectively address humanities' chronic issues like war, poverty and the environment.  At the conference keynote speaker Eboo Patel

convincingly established the necessity and benefits of interfaith cooperation.  Cooperation was evident in the sponsors that included Peace Learning Center, Muslim Voices and Visions, Indiana Humanities Council, American Indian Center of Indiana, and the Danesh Institute which is an Iranian-American academic organization. Pictures and video from the conference are available on our website.

Also on the website are pictures from our November 17th concert with the Yuval Ron Ensemble and a reception hosted by our Pakistani community.  The concert featured vocalist Talia Goren and the reception celebrated Ensemble member Sukhawat Ali Kahn and his mastery of classical raga music and Sufi Qawwali singing.  The Indianapolis Museum of Art hosted the concert which drew over 350 people who feasted on an eclectic blend of insightful stories from the Abrahamic faiths and the wisdom of the poet Rumi while listening to traditional music from Northern Africa, Andalusia Spain, the Middle East and the Punjab region of Pakistan and India. Dancing was a primary theme at both events as

we marveled at the grace and eloquence of Whirling Dervish Aziz and witnessed many audience members up on their feet during several of the ecstatic songs.  Sukhawat Ali Kahn was incredibly charismatic and expressed an unconditional positive regard for everyone he met.  He had members of our Sephardic Jewish community dancing hand in hand with members of our Pakistani Muslim community during the reception while Norik Manoukian joined in on woodwinds and Yuval Ron and Jamie Papish played percussion.  It was truly a magical evening of music, laughter, and dancing and there was a palpable hope for a better future together!

Click here for a beautiful slide show of the concert provided by local artist and photographer Denis Kelly.

This was a banner year for the interfaith community in Central Indiana with a visit by the Dali Lama benefitting the Interfaith Hunger Initiative, a letter from the Jewish community affirming their respect for the Muslim community, the 28th annual Interfaith Peace Prayer Service at Marian University, the Muslim Alliance of Indiana's conference encouraging assistance for victims of Agent Orange in the United States and in Vietnam, Pedals for Peace and Greg Mortenson fundraising for women and education in Afghanistan, the Kenya Carnival supporting students in Africa, a celebration with the Sikh community at the State House, youth and adult dialogues,  numerous celebrations with food and music- and the list goes on.  We are fortunate to live in a community that values its diversity and offers a wealth of opportunities to reach across ethnic, national and religious boundaries to benefit the common good while enriching our own lives. This is truly an advantage of living in America and a responsibility for us to share with other societies.

As you settle in for the winter and think about what it means to celebrate as people of faith all around the globe, we encourage you to lift up good thoughts for families everywhere. As one global family, we wish for each other all good things--peace, harmony, safety, and provision--until we have the chance to be in each other's presence once again.

Many blessings this December, with a sincere hope for ever-increasing understanding in our future.

Volunteer Opportunities
There's a new opportunity for you to help children in Indianapolis - Peace Coaches.  We are recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with students building conflict management and emotional literacy that will benefit them in the classroom, neighborhood and future.

As a Peace Coach you will lead small groups of elementary or high school students through an interactive and highly participatory curriculum.  Teams of volunteers visit a classroom for six 1 ½ hour sessions after receiving a two hour orientation.

This new offering allows Peace Learning Center to bring professionals into classrooms, offering students real-world perspectives on the value of critical communication skills and civility. It also allows the volunteer to learn healthy communication skills that will be an asset in the home and workplace.

Peace Coaches was piloted this spring with five attorneys from the Indianapolis Bar Association leadership program at Shortridge Magnet High School.  Teacher Mary Nolan said her students benefited greatly through the work of caring adults.
In addition to Peace Coaches, Peace Learning Center volunteer opportunities include:
  • Corporate and Community events - Help us with our Tuesdays @ PLC and other events while learning.
  •  Landscaping and beautification at PLC Eagle Creek Park -  Maintain historic building and grounds.
  • Shout Out Crew - Publicize PLC through email and social media.
  • Office and Clerical

Contact Lisa Jones, Human Resources Director at 317.327.7144 or ljones@peacelearningcenter.org for all volunteer positions.

The Challenge is Here!

Peace Learning Center recently received a challenge that we need your help with.

There is way too much bullying, conflicts and despair in our schools.  You can do something about it.

Our Peace Coaches program recruits, trains and engages volunteers to help young people learn how to be peacemakers.

The Two Oaks Fund, a fund of the Indianapolis Foundation, gave PLC a challenge grant for $20,000 to expand Peace Coaches to more schools.

This means we must raise $20,000 to receive the funding.  All funds are devoted to pay for our Peace Coaches program that helps youth learn how to deal with their emotions, anti-bully strategies, and increases their commitment to school.

Will you help us?  Simply click here to make a donation now while you are thinking about it.

Thank you for your support of Peace Learning Center!

"I was ready to be sent to alternative school because of my behavior, but the principal gave me one last chance - go to the Peace Learning Program after-school and if I complete it, I'll get to stay in school.  Not only did I complete the ten weeks, I kept going because they taught me things I need to know in life and they helped me get over the anger I had when I found out my father wasn't my real father.
