PLC RECEIVES $905,000 FROM LILLY ENDOWMENT Lilly Endowment recently awarded Peace Learning Center $905,000 for its Peace School Program, a universal prevention effort to educate students, teachers, and parents on conflict resolution and communication skills. This includes a major partnership with ACT OUT - an interactive theater troupe thru Claude McNeal Productions.
The funding will be focused on students in Kindergarten through 12th grade at 24 schools in Indianapolis Public Schools and other disadvantaged schools -- many of which are schools in low-income neighborhoods and areas for gangs, high school dropouts, and high crime. The Peace School Program provides an approach incorporating communication skills, bully prevention, diversity appreciation and conflict resolution techniques for every student and teacher and as many family members as possible. The goal of the program is to drive academic performance and to build character through relationship and conflict management education.
"Support from Lilly Endowment expands proven programs that help youth build critical thinking skills and a commitment to education," said Tim Nation, Peace Learning Center cofounder and executive director. |
PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT K-12 ProgramsPeace Learning Center's Youth Services team is busy finishing up our programming at many local schools, as the school year comes to a close. In addition to ongoing work with Arsenal Technical, Northwest, Howe and George Washington Community High Schools, students at IPS #94 George Buck Elementary and Shortridge Magnet High School have been learning about community and communication. At Shortridge, a special partnership with a group of talented attorneys from the Indiana Bar Association's leadership program have served as Peace Coaches, providing small group activities and insights into their career paths. Additionally, Peace Learning Center facilitators continue to provide valuable learning experiences to youth incarcerated at the Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility, as well as facility staff. As the school year closes, Peace Learning Center has begun planning new programs for the fall with many schools, both within Indianapolis Public Schools and beyond. Additionally, we have begun taking reservations for summer camp and camp staff training services, offered at a special reduced rate thanks to the Summer Youth Programs Fund. If your school or summer program is interested in learning more about Peace Learning Center, scheduling programming or having an organizational needs assessment, please contact Youth Services Director Kirsten Eamon-Shine at keamon-shine@peacelearningcenter.org. Peace Learning Center's programs provide youth and adults involved in their lives with engaging opportunities to gain new communication, conflict management and emotional literacy skills.
Peace Learning Center is also pleased to provide a new program, Connect & Communicate, to parents and youth facing challenges. Through this program, families can take advantage of individualized conflict facilitation sessions and hands-on workshops that provide new ways to share and connect within the family. If you or a family you know could benefit from this program, please contact Kirsten Eamon-Shine. Unfortunately, we are unable to serve youth who are currently on probation or identified as a Child in Need of Services by the state through this prevention program.
For more information on our programs, please contact Kirsten Eamon-Shine at

International Interfaith Initiative
CIC Open House was a Community Celebration
The Open House for the Center for Interfaith Cooperation on April 20th was a great success. It turned out to be a beautiful evening and a variety of organizations participated by networking and sharing information about projects that promote understanding, improve our community and help build a better world. In addition to fourteen community information booths the Open House hosted:
· The Indianapolis premier of a documentary film about an Iraqi refugee family living in Indianapolis (visit www.thealhurs.com for more info)
· An update about Haiti reconstruction with two groups that recently returned from the island
· A photography exhibit from Lauren Binning and Pulitzer prize winning photojournalist Bill Foley
· Fabulous music by Indianapolis DJ Christopher Hunt
There was also a fundraiser for Haiti that garnered over $2,120 for reconstruction efforts thanks to
CIC Open House | contributions from Muslim Alliance of Indiana, Klaus Martin Finzel and Open House attendees.
CIC is busy planning a variety of fun and educational workshops that foster understanding between and among the many diverse faith communities in Central Indiana. Look for schedules in upcoming newsletters and feel free to stop by the Center next time you are in the neighborhood. We are located in the Indiana Interchurch Center Suite 125, located on the south east corner of 42nd and Michigan Rd.

UPCOMING EVENTS
May 11, 2010: "The Power of Renewal"
Richard Smith | Time: 8:30a-10:00a Presenter: Richard W. Smith Registration Fee: $5.00 Location: Peace Learning Center
Session Description: Many of us are addicted to and depleted by speed, busyness, distraction, noise, and shallowness. At any given moment we may make choices that deplete ourselves Physically, Intellectually, Emotionally and/or Spiritually. If our nurturing is not equal to or greater than our depleting behaviors then over time the price we pay will be great - we may end up with little or no passion for our work and perhaps even for our lives. During this brief session we will explore both depletion and nurturance and provide an opportunity for you to affirm, if not reaffirm, your commitment to your own renewal.
The Presenter: Richard W Smith is a depth-educator and organization development specialist. He has been working with individuals and organizations for more than 42 years in seven different countries. Currently Richard serves as associate consultant for Peace Learning Center and adjunct faculty member with the Physician Leadership College (University of St Thomas), the Greenleaf Centre for Servant-Leadership, Asia (Singapore), the Expanded Learning Institute, the Center for Creative Leadership and the Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership (Indianapolis). IN THE COMMUNITY & MEDIA
Peace Learning Center was included in Matthew Tully's article in The Indianapolis Star on Sunday, April 25 regarding the "Our Children, Our City - The Manual Project" series. As the article stated, there are many schools and organizations that are working to make a difference in the lives of children. Peace Learning Center was listed as one of the few "that are especially effective."
Check out Peace Learning Center in the April 28-May 5 issue of NUVO in the "ThumbsUp ThumbsDown" column. PLC gets a ThumbsUp for the recent Lilly Endowment grant. |
