Students involved in service projects and learning as part of Dalai Lama's visit
As part the Dalai Lama's visit to Indianapolis on May 14, Peace Learning Center is engaging hundreds of local students in service projects and conflict resolution education. The project includes an opportunity for youth to attend a presentation by the Dalai Lama at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and service projects to improve our community.
During a full day program, youth from Indianapolis Public Schools and other central Indiana schools will participate in Peace Jam - an international project that gives youth the opportunity to interact with ten Nobel Peace Prize winners including the Dalai Lama, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Oscar Arias, Shirin Ebadi and others.
This project was launched in partnership with Dalai Lama's Indianapolis host committee that includes the Interfaith Hunger Initiative, Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center, Indiana Buddhist Center and Pacers Sports and Entertainment.

Students at PLC
 | K-12 Programs Peace Learning Center's Youth Services Team is keeping busy this spring, with engaging programs for elementary, middle and high school students. In addition to our ongoing work with freshmen at Northwest and Warren Central High Schools, PLC facilitators continue their commitment to students who are over-age and under-grade at Howe, Marshall and Washington Community Schools. Work with IPS #91 and #94 elementary schools continues this spring, with a combination of arts-focused and team-building activities enriching PLC's traditional curriculum. In all of these settings, young people are learning new ways to communicate, exploring the value of community and leadership, and building their ability to manage their emotions. With support from local Early Intervention and Prevention efforts, Peace Learning Center recently launched the Connect & Communicate program for families. When adolescents face challenges, family communication and connection can provide critical support. Through this program, Peace Learning Center conflict facilitators will work with individual families to work through challenging situations, including youth arrests, family arguments and truancy. Then, families gain additional skills in workshops tailored to build trust, understanding and healthy communication skills within homes. Through a referral partnership with the new Family and Youth Intervention Center, as well as local schools and social service agencies, Connect & Communicate is allowing Peace Learning Center to provide essential support and information to families.

Our March Corporate & Community Programs offered three engaging sessions that spanned the topics of trust, leadership and bully prevention. As a part of our Tuesdays at PLC series, we offered "Rebuilding Trust: Creating a Culture of Candor", presented by Debra Jarvis on March 9th. On March 11th we partnered with Marian University to bring "Lead from the Heart: Ethical Perspectives on Servant Leadership". With over 100 people in attendance, this session included a panel presentation focused on the ethical perspectives of servant leadership. Panelists included Richard W. Smith, Depth Educator and Peace Learning Center Associate Consultant, Dr. Kent Keith, CEO, The Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, Dr. Karen Spear, Director of the Center for Organizational Ethics at Marian University, and Marcy Ripberger, President, Character Council of Indiana. March 19th brought a half-day session on "Bully Prevention in Schools", presented by Gina Woodward. A big thank you to our venue partner, Purdue Extension Service, Marion County for hosting our March 19 session! April & May Corporate & Community Programs:
April 13, 2010: "Engaging 'The Other' - A Dialogue Session" (mini-session)
Time: 8:30a-10:00a Presenter: Tamyra Freeman Registration Fee: $5.00 Location: Peace Learning Center
Session Description: "The Other" is that person or group of persons that is not like you and is often perceived as the barrier to effective workplace teams, family harmony, political progress, and global peace. This brief session will begin to explore questions like: Who is 'the other' for me? What elicits a negative response in me when I encounter 'the other?' How might I move towards more compassion and less hostility for people I see as different from me? Register Here
May 11, 2010: "The Power of Renewal"Time: 8:30a-10:00a Presenter: Richard W. Smith Registration Fee: $5.00 Location: Peace Learning Center Session Description: Many of us are addicted to and depleted by speed, busyness, distraction, noise, and shallowness. At any given moment we may make choices that deplete ourselves Physically, Intellectually, Emotionally and/or Spiritually. If our nurturing is not equal to or greater than our depleting behaviors then over time the price we pay will be great - we may end up with little or no passion for our work and perhaps even for our lives. During this brief session we will explore both depletion and nurturance and provide an opportunity for you to affirm, if not reaffirm, your commitment to your own renewal. Register Here

International Interfaith Initiative
Interfaith Groups Come Together to Form New Partnership in Central Indiana The International Interfaith Initiative, Muslim Alliance of Indiana, and more than a dozen other organizations have come together to establish a partnership and lease office space in order to build capacity and create synergy between and among Central Indiana's faith-based and community groups. Rabbi Lew Weiss, presidential of Interfaith Alliance of Indianapolis, coined the name of this venture, "Center for Interfaith Cooperation" (CIC). CIC provides a platform and support for Central Indiana's religious organizations and faith-based initiatives. Building on the region's dense network of interfaith connections and informal dialogues, CIC will strengthen and expand existing partnerships, help potential collaborations become actual, and ensure that the area's congregations are better equipped to flourish in the new realities of the 21st century. This partnership is based on the belief that differences between religious traditions can be a vital source of creative and cooperative solutions to chronic and systemic problems in society. CIC in now leasing office and conference space in the Interchurch Center located at 1100 West 42nd Street. The Interchurch Center has been a center for ecumenical work for over four decades in Central Indiana and provides an ideal location to help strengthen the interfaith movement emerging in our community. Come celebrate with us at our Open House (see info below) anytime between 4-7pm on Tuesday the 20th of April, learn more about how we plan to help interfaith organizations and share your thoughts about how CIC can be most effective.
