Top 10 Reasons to Avoid Sugar
sugar
Sugar, in its many forms, is an increasingly common ingredient in processed foods. Many of us eat the equivalent of 53 heaping teaspoons of white sugar every day!

  1. Sugar contributes to tooth decay because it decreases the effectiveness of a particular type of white blood cell that "eats" bacteria.
  2. Sugar causes the body to release more adrenalin, which may explain hyperactivity in young children.
  3. Calcium loss in urine occurs when a person consumes a soft drink containing sugar.
  4. Ingesting sugar makes the pancreas work harder to produce insulin. Diabetes results when the overworked pancreas can no longer eliminate sugar from the blood stream.
  5. Bleached with chlorine, when white refined sugar is exposed to certain organic compounds it converts to dioxin, a lethal compound.
  6. Sugar can hinder weight loss because high insulin levels (see #4 above) cause the body to store excess carbohydrates as fat.
  7. Sugar increases the likelihood of chronic fatigue.
  8. Sugar increases mood swings, irritability and anxiety.
  9. Sugar compromises the immune system because it lowers the efficiency of white blood cells for a minimum of five hours.
  10. Eating sugar can decrease helpful high-density cholesterol (HDLs) and result in an increase in harmful cholesterol (LDLs).
Need to sweeten your food? Add raisins, dates or honey. Stevia is also a safer alternative. It's available in several forms, has no calories and doesn't raise blood sugar levels. Clearly, a better choice to satisfy any sweet tooth!

November 2009 Newsletter
Greetings!

This past weekend, I had the privilege of seeing 4 strong women complete in their very first triathlon at the Blue Water Triathlon in Parker, AZ.  They swam 600 meters in the Colorado River with a strong current; then rode their bikes for 9 miles through a trailer park and on a road with killer speed bumps and giant pot holes (did I mention the drunk women cheering them on in the trailer park?); and finished with a 2.5 mile run with rocks and hills.  To say the event was exciting is an understatement.

Watching Teena, Laura S, Kim and Laura B compete reminded me of how much fun working out can be - and how important it is to have goals and people to support you to help you reach your goals.  Each one of these competitors invited family to attend the race to encourage them and keep them motivated.  But they also had these same people supporting them while they trained for the big day.

You need someone on your sideline too.  If you fall off the wagon, they can help you back on.  This is one of the biggest reasons why people fail to achieve their goals; they try to do it by themselves.  During a major transformation period, we need to feel that we are not alone.  It is important to share your experiences, not only to help yourself, but to help others in their journey as well.  Think about it - how much harder do you work when someone else is paying attention?

When we work together to accomplish a goal, we can make it further and achieve even more.  And the reward is not limited to the participant...those of us on the sidelines get to do a happy dance too!

Living With Pain
WHY DO PEOPLE FIND IT ACCEPTABLE TO LIVE WITH PAIN?

I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say "Oh, its just my back" or "I just have bad knees" and then do lowbackpainNOTHING about it!

Did you know that 90% of Americans suffer from chronic pain?!  Nearly 100% of people have experienced some sort of chronic or recurring pain at some point in their lives.  The most common form of pain experienced is low back pain.  Neck and shoulder pain are a close second followed by knee and hip pain.

Most of this pain is caused by a simple structural abnormality or muscle imbalance.  And when I say simple, I mean you most likely  don't need surgery to correct the problem - just good, old-fashioned exercise.  Can you imagine if someone told you they could help you get out of pain FOR GOOD?!  How much is your body worth to you?  How much is being OUT OF PAIN worth to you?!

WE CAN HELP YOU GET OUT OF PAIN FOR GOOD!

What is Corrective Exercise?
Corrective exercise includes correcting muscle imbalances, reconditioning injured anatomical locations, preparing non-contractile tissue for the upcoming imposed demands of training, preventing tissue overload through progressive adaptation, improving work capacity, improving stabilization strength, and establishing proper movement patterns.  These programs are best designed by a C.H.E.K. Practitioner.

What is a C.H.E.K Practitioner?
cheklogo
C.H.E.K Practitioners are specialists in Corrective Exercise and High-performance Kinesiology. They are trained in assessment techniques and individualized application of exercise and exercise programs. The higher the level completed, the more practical knowledge and experience they will have, particularly in complex orthopedic conditions. A C.H.E.K Practitioner has completed a rigorous battery of exams and demonstrated proficient understanding in live presentations. C.H.E.K Practitioners come from a varied background including fitness professionals, strength and conditioning coaches, physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, podiatrists, athletic trainers and so on.

What is the Kinetic Chain Assessment?
During this process, you will be measured and tested for (all information is what is used to individualize YOUR program needs):
  1. Static posture (plumb line assessment- sagital, frontal and transverse planes of motion)
  2. Dynamic posture (primal patterns- squatting, lunging, pushing, pulling, rotating, walking, and bending)
  3. Upper cervical and cervical ROM (range of motion) and atlas testing
  4. Length-tension relationships of global (movement) muscle system
  5. Lumbo-pelvic rhythms
  6. Spinal measurements and movements (flexion, extension and rotation)
  7. Abdominal strength and coordination testing
  8. Muscle testing
