CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Yes, it's true!

The Manitoba Children's Museum has plans to renew and refresh the exhibits and galleries in our historic CN train repair building with a $10M Capital Campaign.

Over 2 million pairs of hands and feet have played in the Manitoba Children's Museum since we opened here at The Forks in 1994. Though our galleries are well-loved, it is time for a major renewal.

We are currently working with an exhibit design firm and architects to map out ideas for a Welcome Centre addition, an interactive Arts & Exhibition Centre and twelve exciting new galleries.

Our current plans will see the museum closing for construction in Fall 2010 and reopening in Spring 2011.
The Welcome Centre
Welcome Centre - Exterior
The entrance, including the admissions area, SHOP (the museum's own toy store) and coat and lunchroom facility, will be redeveloped. This redevelopment will increase safety and security, and will improve access to the Manitoba Children's Museum.

Welcome Centre - Interior
Making our facility secure is important to our visitors. This new entrance will serve to enhance access, as caregivers know that the Manitoba Children's Museum not only provides opportunities for children to learn through play, but does so in a facility where the risk related to physical safety and security has been deliberately minimized.
The Arts & Exhibition Centre

The new Arts & Exhibition Centre will provide a professional venue specially designed for artistic presentation for and by children. It will also provide an updated facility for the display of children's exhibitions in a venue specifically geared for children. It will offer flexible configuration through the use of collapsible seating and walls to support travelling exhibits and a wide range of programs, workshops and performances.

The Arts & Exhibition Centre will be made up of two areas:
  1. The Arts and Exhibition Hall
  2. The Education and Workshop Rooms
The Arts and Exhibition Hall will have comfortable seating, professional technology including artistic staging suitable for both children and adults, as well as sound and lighting equipment that will be conducive to full audience participation.

The Education and Workshop Rooms will support school children as they interact and experience the arts in an environment designed specifically for them. These rooms can be reconfigured into different sized rooms, and will include state-of-the-art sound and lighting requirements for travelling exhibits.
The 12 New Galleries
Gallery Map
Twelve new galleries will present a world of possibilities for children and caregivers who will enjoy the museum each year. The latest innovations in education come together with creative environments to provide a powerful learning experience that entertains as it educates.

It's a wild ride so hang on tight!

Illusion Tunnel
Illusion Tunnel

What's real? What's not? How is what you see different from what really is? Can the train rumble down the line into the tunnel? Using forced perspective and a ramped floor, you're drawn into this giant slide to test your perceptions. Plus, there's a great platform to spy on all the fun going on at the museum!

Time Squared
Time Squared

Every town needs a central meeting place; to share exciting stories, to rest up before the next big adventure, or to plan out another series of explorations! "I'll meet you here later!" and "What will we do first?" are phrases you will hear in Time Squared. So synchronize your watches at the Square Clock Tower and let's get going!

Pop m'Art
Pop m'Art
This is no ordinary grocery store, and it sure isn't an art exhibit. So what is it? It's Pop m'Art - where kids "shop" for their supplies and create works of art! The stock is always changing, the creations transforming, and is always alive! This space IS art, but on the largest scale. Fun inspires your mind in the hip and cool cube!

Splash Lab
Splash Lab
Grab a lab-coat-slicker and join in the fun!  Whether you're playing by the enormous Bubble Wall, having a blast in Splash Lab, or finishing it all off with an experiment. Explore water when it's soaking wet or airy vapour. Watch out - there's water everywhere!

Mellow Marsh
Mellow Marsh

Deep in the quiet forest of leaves, this "organic" cube makes the small, giant and the big, tiny. Bug-sized visitors walk under the shelter to do quiet things like relaxing, examining, listening, building or curling up with a book in a giant soft cocoon. The cube sides are made of giant leaves,
some transparent, some with words and poems. It is a tranquil forest of discovery.

Milk Machine
Milk Machine
Can you see what a cow sees?  Can you hear what a cow hears?  Of course you can, if you're at the Cow Controls in the Milk Machine!  When you enter the GIANT cow cube, you're going to have a "dairy" good time. Grass, stomachs, and udders set the "moo-d" as you learn about modern dairy farming practices and the importance of milk in a balanced diet.

Sound Track
Let the beat carry you down the track and stimulate your sense of rhythm!  Little hands enjoy and create sounds in unusual ways. Whether you're listening to patterns of sounds, trying to create your own, or remembering what sound comes next, this sound track is full of the best kind of music...your own!

Tumble Zone
Tumble Zone
Is this a builder's fantasy, an ambitious urban planning project, or a game? Inside are all the things you need to create your own unique cityscape using strange and unusual pieces that replace traditional building blocks. Construction can be a job for one person or a team! But wait! Not satisfied with the result? Knock it down, start again, and build something even crazier!

Tot Spot
Tot Spot
Getting there is all the fun - especially if you're the littlest museum visitor. Tots ride, walk, or crawl their way over bridges and through a tunnel. So park your stroller at the Stroller Park and crawl into your own miniature version of the Children's Museum!

Junction 9161
Junction 9161 is all about the Train - an important part of Manitoba history. This powerful locomotive forms the spine of the Manitoba Children's Museum experience and it's right there for you! Standing inside and out you can feel the enormity of this great machine. Touch it, smell it, drive it - even work on it! While you're there, check out the Train Stories and you'll start to understand more about the train.

Engine House
Engine House
Gears and levers, pipes and pulleys - these are the parts that help make a real train run. At the Engine House you get to see the insides of an actual train engine and make a little locomotive magic of your own!  Give the Crinkum-Crankum a whirl and imagine you're riding the rails, but don't forget to blow the whistle to let everyone know you're coming!

Lasagna Lookout
Lasagna Lookout
Ever play with your food? Well this food plays with you! Lasagna you can climb through and take a different path each time, always ending up on top at the Lasagna Lookout. Check out the Rigatoni Rollers, Spaghetti Forest or take a break on the Ravioli Pillows! Each layer is an experiment in textures - rough, smooth, soft and prickly - what a tactile feast for the senses!
