Family Craft 'n Fun: Egg Carton
Animal Nose Mask
As featured in the August 22/23 Project du Jour
Items Needed:
-
Egg Carton
-
Elastic or Yarn
-
Masking Tape
-
White Glue
-
Scissors
-
Hole Punch
-
Items for decoration (paint, pompoms, pipe cleaners, markers, etc.)
Instructions:
- Start out by cutting one cup section from your egg carton. Using the hole punch, make two holes directly across from each other towards the open end on the sides of the egg carton cup to attach the yarn. Cut two pieces of yarn big enough to fit around your head with enough extra to tie at the back of the head.
- Now, you can use whatever supplies you have on hand to decorate your egg carton cup to look like an animal's snout. You can either paint it or cover it with felt, fabric or paper. A pompom makes a perfect nose on the snout, and you can use yarn, string, and even paint or marker to make a mouth. Don't forget other details like whiskers or freckles!
- Once you have your nose looking the way you want it, string one end of the yarn into each hole. Tie a knot in the end of each to secure. Try on your disguise nose to make sure the yarn fits. Tie in place and rule the animal kingdom!

Kids Festival of the Arts
The Manitoba Children's Museum is proud to present its 6th Annual Kids Festival of the Arts during the week of August 3 - 8.
This year, Kids Festival of the Arts will feature daily workshops, performances and experiences where children are immersed in arts and culture to highlight our newest temporary exhibit, Food for Health. This festival will introduce guests to experiences in order to emphasize active and healthy living through dance, musical, dramatic, visual, media, culinary, and literary art forms. Through performances, demonstrations, workshops and activities, festival participants will experience the arts by creating, viewing and interacting with our special guests, MCM staff, and volunteers. There will be a free outdoor hands-on arts and crafts station available each day from 11:00AM to 3:00PM. Performances and presentations will be scheduled at various times throughout the week in both indoor and outdoor venues.
Monday, August 3 - Dance Day
Follow the leader or skip to your own beat! There is no right way or wrong to dance. Celebrate the world of dance with a special guest dance instructor and learn to move to the sound of the music! If that's not enough to get you moving, join us for the craft of the day as we paint in an extraordinary way - with our food!
Tuesday, August 4 - Visual Arts Day
Finally, a day where you are allowed to play with your food. Art City will be here from 1:00PM - 3:00PM helping our visitors create some food sculptures that will be too yummy for words!
Wednesday, August 5 - Dramatic Arts Day
Explore the world of Improvisation with our special guest, the remarkable RobYn Slade. She will be providing workshops filled with games and improvisational tools from 11:00AM -12:00PM and from 1:30PM - 2:30PM to help teach our visitors about healthy choices. We will also be experimenting with visual expression as we create masks for our craft of the day!
Thursday, August 6 - Literary Arts Day
A picture may be worth a thousand words, but words can also paint a beautiful picture. Join us for an imaginative story time with the Story Fairy at 1:00PM. Visitors can also put their own story into words and images with "Create a Storybook" craft!
Friday, August 7 - Musical Arts Day
Time to sing your heart out with Aaron Burnett! Aaron Burnett will be helping us get our bodies dancing and jiving as he sings! He will have performances at 11:00AM and again at 1:00PM. If his music doesn't get you dancing, maybe you can create your own musical beat with the craft of the day: musical instruments!
Saturday, August 8 - Movement Arts Day
Dancing isn't the only form of art we can create with our bodies. Dhyana from the St. Norbert's Art Centre will teach us how to keep our bodies healthy as well as how to move our bodies in creative new ways with yoga. Join us for some yoga workshops starting at 11:00AM and ending at 1:00PM. After your workshop, come and create noses and tails from your favorite animal yoga pose at the craft of the day table! |

We'll be spying on the ingredients in food, playing food hide and seek, and learning how to make good choices to stay healthy. Ingredient heroes and villains are all over the place as we explore how food gets from the farm to your fork. An x-ray puzzle, yoga, shopping cart games, and capes help us to complete our nutrition mission!
Take an activity tracker home to continue the mission, bring it back completed, and be entered into a draw for a gift basket full of great prizes!
