Family Craft 'n Fun:
Bee Mine Valentines

February 09 Craft - Bee Mine Valentines

(As featured for the February 14 & 15 Project du Jour craft.)

Craft Items Feb 09

Items Needed:
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Yellow tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper
  • Hole punch
  • Marker
  • Lollipops
  • Black and yellow pipe cleaners
Instructions:

  1. Fold one 6-inch black pipe cleaner into a V-shape.
  2. Holding another black pipe cleaner alongside a yellow pipe cleaner, wrap both of them around the V. Use the pipe cleaners' entire length and be sure to leave a small gap at the folded end, where you'll slide in the lollipop stick. Bend back the ends of the V to form antennae.
  3. Glue on googly eyes and yellow tissue paper wings.
  4. Cut a heart shape from coloured construction paper. Punch two holes about an inch apart in the heart. Write "Mine" on it plus any other message on the back. Then slide the bee onto the lollipop and slip the lollipop through the holes. Now you have a very sweet valentine to give to your honey!

Volunteers are a valued asset at the Manitoba Children's Museum seven days a week!

We offer our volunteers:
  • training, coaching and recognition
  • experience in career-related areas
  • letters of reference
  • opportunities to make a difference in the lives of children
  • flexible schedules

The minimum age for MCM volunteers is 13 years old, and we have no maximum age!

Volunteers begin the application process by attending an information session. (Note: If you are under 18 years old, your guardian must attend as well.)

The next scheduled information session is planned for: Saturday, February 21 at 1:00PM

Exhibit Animators Needed!

In February, the Manitoba Children's Museum will welcome a new traveling exhibit, Tigers and Dragons, and we need a team of volunteers to bring the cultures of China and India to life with storytelling, costumes, crafts and more!

Be a Spring Break Day Camp Counsellor!

Are you interested in being a volunteer counselor at MCM Spring Break Day Camp?  If you are, please contact the Volunteer Resources Manager so that we can arrange for you to attend an orientation.

The volunteer counselor role provides an excellent opportunity for volunteers to develop communication, leadership, and other employment-related skills in a safe and encouraging environment. Day camp volunteers should be 15 years of age or older, and each volunteer counselor needs to attend an orientation. The volunteer counselor role is a terrific opportunity to gain skills - and it is FUN!

The volunteer counsellor orientation for Spring Break Day Camp will be on Saturday, March 7 at 10:00AM.

For more information or if you plan to attend one of the upcoming information sessions, please contact: Lynn Silver, Volunteer Resources Manager, by phone at 924-4002 or by e-mail at lsilver@childrensmuseum.com.

Dream Gallery

Dream Gallery Feb 09
MCM's gallery displaying children's artwork on the Mezzazine is open for viewing Monday to Friday.

The students from St. Charles School's Before and After Program have worked hard to finish their winter scenes. From fluffy hills to falling snowflakes, these pictures are a chilly treat. This is the easiest way to enjoy the coldest season while staying warm! A special thanks to each and every artist.
Volunteer Spotlight:
Nicole Petroski
Nicole Petroski Volunteer Spotlight
Nicole Petroski has been volunteering at the Manitoba Children's Museum since April 2008. Surrounded by children and limitless sources of inspiration, it's little wonder that Nicole has fallen headfirst down the rabbit hole into the realm of storytelling and children's literature with her first children's book, The Very Lonely Sandwich.

"The idea actually came from my niece at a family gathering back in 2002," recalls Nicole. Inspired by a classroom creative writing activity, Nicole's niece assigned her ten minutes to come up with a story, the only directive being, "Your subject is mayonnaise - GO!" It was lunch time, and Nicole, seeking inspiration, looked to the kitchen counter loaded with sandwich fixings.

And so The Very Lonely Sandwich was born.

Though the idea behind this book was left to simmer for a few years, Nicole has always been a motivated person who dreams big and makes her own dreams come true with a DIY attitude. When she finally decided to commit the story to print, she tackled the entire business of story-writing and book publishing herself. She found her own illustrator, Lynda Regan, did the design and layout herself, started her own publishing company, and dealt directly with the printer.

Aimed at children under seven years old, Nicole's book tells the story of a very lonely sandwich that meets several ingredients and becomes a full, healthy and happy sandwich.

Published by Purple Tuesday Press, The Very Lonely Sandwich is available for $7.99 in SHOP at the Manitoba Children's Museum, as well as at both McNally Robinson locations in the city, Silver Lotus on Osborne Street and Globosapiens Bookstore Cafe on Roblin Avenue.

Nicole will be reading The Very Lonely Sandwich at the Manitoba Children's Museum on Sunday, February 22 at 1:00PM as part of the museum's special I Love to Read Month programming.

A big kid at heart, we caught up with Jon in our WonderWorks infrastructure gallery (seen here with youngsters, Prairie and Temple).
