Family Corner
Welcome to our Family Corner!

In this issue, we have a great craft idea to share with you that will engage the whole family and promote family time!

Family Craft 'n Fun:
The Wise Old Owl

Owl Craft - Finished

(As featured in October 20, 2008 Mini Monday Activity.)

Craft Supplies

Items Needed:
  • Paper plates (x3)
  • Scissors
  • Glue, tape or stapler
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Crayons, paint or markers
  • Yellow, brown or orange construction paper
  • Pine cones, feathers, or other assorted craft supplies for decoration (optional)
Instructions:

  1. Using construction paper, cut a small half-circle with a small square tab on the rounded side (see image). Curve the edges around, forming a cone and glue it shut.Owl Craft - Beak Sample Also using construction paper, cut two small owl feet.
  2. On one paper plate, fold the plate about a third of the way, with the bottom of the plate facing forwards (see image below). This paper plate will become the owl's head.
  3. On the folded part, cut two short slits and fold them back up.These will be the owl's tufts
    (see image below).
Fact: Although owl's tufts look like ears, they are only feathers. An owl's ears are simply holes on the side of its head!
  4. Fold the centre section back and glue down.
  5. Glue googly eyes on the plate.
  6. Glue the cone to the paper plate to make the owl's beak.
  7. Glue the head to a second paper plate. This will become the body (see image below).
  8. Cut the third paper plate in half. These will become the owl's wings.
  9. Glue the wings to the body with the rounded side facing into the body (see image below).
  10. Glue the feet to the bottom part of the body.
  11. Colour the owl by drawing feathers or decorate using various materials (i.e., peeled pine cones, feathers, glitter) and glue them to the body.Owl Craft - Step-by-step
  12. Display your masterpiece in a prominent location for all to see!

Volunteers spark curiosity, learning and adventure!

The holiday season offers program, gallery and event opportunities for MCM volunteers. Volunteer support is appreciated in the afternoon of any day during the holiday season.

If you are already an MCM volunteer and your holiday schedule is planned, please contact the Volunteer Resources Manager at MCM.

If you aren't yet a volunteer, there's still time!

The minimum age for MCM volunteers is 13 years old, and we have no maximum age!

Volunteers begin the application process by attending an information session. (Note: If you are under 18 years old, your guardian must attend as well.) The next scheduled information session is planned for:
Saturday, November 15

at 1:00PM.

For more information or if you plan to attend one of the upcoming information sessions, please contact: Lynn Silver, Volunteer Resources Manager, by phone at 924-4002 or by e-mail at lsilver@childrensmuseum.com.
