Family Corner
|
Welcome to our first Family Corner! In this issue, we have a great craft idea to share with you that will engage the whole
family and promote family time! Family Craft 'n Fun: Homemade Sidewalk Chalk
 (As featured live on CityTV's Breakfast Television on August 21, 2008.)Items Needed:- 1 cup plaster of paris
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp powdered tempera paint (add more as desired for colour)
- Some type of mold for chalk (i.e., wax dixie cups, egg carton, silicon ice cube trays)
Instructions: - Mix equal parts water and plaster of paris together in a bowl (should be a toothpaste consistency). Once the mixture has dried, remove it from the mold.
- Add tempera paint to mixture.
- Once paint has been mixed in well, set aside for a few minutes.
- Pour the mixture into a mold and allow to dry overnight (drying time varies based on the size of the mold). If once removed from the mold the mixture is still moist, allow to air-dry for another 24 hours.
- Go outside and create a masterpiece on your sidewalk - enjoy!

The Manitoba
Children's Museum offers volunteer roles in the following areas:
- Face painting
- Cotton candy making
- Crafts
- Preschool & school programs
- Gallery activities
- and more!
The Manitoba Children's Museum offers our volunteers a great team
environment, flexible
schedules, training and
coaching, experience in
career-related areas and more! We depend on volunteers to bring their very best to their role at the
MCM. (Please note: The volunteer experience at the MCM may not suit
someone who is very reserved or cautious with people.)
Anyone interested in becoming an MCM
volunteer needs to complete a straightforward application
process. The first step is to attend an
information session. The next scheduled
information session is planned for Saturday, September 13th at 1:00PM.

viewing Mondays through Fridays.
As the children
head back to school, the students from Kent Road School would like to remind us all about
their summer. From swimming pools to
sunny days, these pictures will bring back fond memories for everyone.

Summer Day Camp

MCM's Summer Day Camps are about fun experiences where kids are safe and empowered. Our goal is to help
build kids' physical well-being, nurture their creative energy and develop
their intellectual potential. Each day of our action-packed week includes
themed activities, play time in the galleries, movement and physical activity,
quieter times at our learning centres, team building and small group activities
and creative pursuits. There will also be visits from special guests and field
trips.
August 25-29 Day Camp Theme:
Arts Adventure Let your imagination soar in
this week devoted to creative arts. Discover your wild side through storytelling, illustrating, music,
drama and more. It's a week filled
with creative energy. Special workshops
with guest artists will set the stage for creating with various art media.

Check Out Crystals to Gems!
Until October 19, 2008

Our newest exhibit Crystals to Gems explores the world of crystals: how they grow and their variety in
form and colour. A traveling exhibition from the Canadian Museum
of Nature, Crystals to Gems
introduces visitors to gemstones, including their special attributes of beauty,
rarity and durability and how they are cut and polished. Visitors will also get
a glimpse of some Canadian gemstones and discover where the minerals are found
in Canada.
Children can sift for gold or play a "rock" song on our new drill core
xylophone.
Included with museum admission.

Say Farewell to Much More Munsch!
Closing September 1, 2008
Clang, Clang, Rattle-Bing-Bang!!!
Join us before September 1st to make some final noise with Much
More Munsch, our traveling exhibit based on the books of celebrated
children's author Robert Munsch.
For the past twenty years, Robert Munsch has created a distinctive method of
imagining, developing and telling his stories. His books are the outcome of a
dynamic creative process. This 1,200 sq.ft. bilingual exhibit welcomes kids
into Robert Munsch's home, encourages them to explore his world and discover
their own creative abilities.
Mix and match words, phrases, scenes and sounds and discover the art of
storytelling. Perform for your friends and family. Stomp your way to Mortimer's
room. Get Thomas into his snowsuit. Create your own cast of characters. Read and hear unpublished stories. It's fiction! It's fun! It's
fantastic!

felines Si and Am, the very protective Lady meets Tramp, who shows her what it

jungle when his father passes away. But when Simba grows to be an adult, he is
asked to return to his kingdom in order to defeat his uncle and bring

Aladdin pretends to be a prince in order to
win the hand of Princess Jasmine. Along the way he is aided by an all-powerful

Mini Mondays Are Back!
Mondays
at the Manitoba Children's
Museum are very special days! Every Monday from 10:00AM to 2:00PM, we
tailor crafts and activities to suit the needs of our youngest visitors.
Join us in September as we celebrate Crystals to Gems. We will be offering a special guided craft at
the Creation Station and story time at 11:30AM and 1:30PM in the foyer.
September's themes include: September 8 - Digging Around September 15 - Rockin' and a Rollin' September 22 - Colourful Crystals September 29 - Picturesque Pebbles

13th Annual Halloween Howl
Join MCM once again for a howl of a good time!
The theme has
been chosen, costumes tried on, and activities planned. It is almost that time
of year again for our annual Halloween Howl!
Friday, October 24th from 6:00PM - 9:00PM will be an evening of
magical fun here at the Manitoba Children's Museum.
More details to follow soon!

MCM Star Spotting!
This month, Canadian musician Benjamin Darvill visited us with his daughter and we caught up with them for this photo outside of the Beaver Lodge.
Darvill is known for playing harmonica, mandolin, guitar and more for the Crash Test Dummies and lately has been busy with his solo project, Son of Dave.
Darvill is in town for a Son of Dave performance at the Gas Station Theatre on August 24th.
