Writer and Photographer Tom Reed Slideshow and Book Signing

Thursday, November 11 from 7-8 PM at Back of Beyond Books, 83 N. Main Street

Please join us Thursday night to welcome Tom Reed to our stores. He will be sharing his stories and photographs from his adventures in creating this book. Breathtaking does not begin to explain the quality and beauty of these photographs. Come and see for yourself. See you there!

"Even a cursory glance through 'The Granite Avatars of Patagonia' will reveal the uniqueness of its author's approach to travel literature. Sophisticate...d black and white images alternate with Reed's description of the adventures that made those images possible, photos and text nestled in a clean, Zen-like, high concept design. His writing persona hovers somewhere between ecospiritualist and son of the Beat generation, with an occasional nod to Hemingway.

This is Tom Reed's debut performance in publishi
ng but certainly not his last. He is a born traveler and a writer's writer, and one who gives confident vent to a stream-of-consciousness style because he trusts his own voice to speak his own truth. His audience--from world-class climbers to arm-chair travelers--will listen, enjoy, and be moved to think more deeply about how and why they, too, are awed by nature's wonders.

Almost inevitably, Reed's contemplation of these granite wonders (in Argentina's Pa
rque Nacional Los Glaciares) leads him to view them as avatars, messengers of an intelligent and evolving universe, here to guide us toward the realization that nature, the universe itself, is divine--a provocative proposition to be sure. Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, Reed's explorations of both inner and outer landscapes will cling to the corners of your consciousness. You might never again look at a breathtaking landscape without recalling Reed's lens, his sensibilities, and his definition of 'awe.'"

Sarahlee Lawrence to Read and Sign Her Breathtaking Debut Memoir

Thursday, November 18 from 7-8 PM at Back of Beyond Books, 83 N. Main Street

Sarahlee Lawrence was born and raised on her family ranch in Terrebonne, Oregon. After a decade spent studying, traveling, river rafting, and earning an MS in Environmental Science and Writing from the University of Montana, she returned to the ranch, where she owns and operates an organic vegetable farm.

In this exquisite blend of memoir and nature writing, River House is a young woman's story about returning home. Lawrence grew up in remote central Oregon and spent her days dreaming about leaving her small town for adventure. By the age of twenty-one, Lawrence had rafted some of the world's most dangerous rivers as  an accomplished river guide. But living her dream, riding and cleaning the arteries of the world, led her back to the place that she least expected to end up...her dusty beginnings and her family's ranch.

Please help us celebrate Sarahlee's debut memoir and hear her adventurous tales by joining us in our store on November 18 at 7 pm. We hope to see you there!

Out of the Canyon
By Daily, Art & Allison
Price: $14.00

On a crisp winter's day in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado, Art Daily suffered a terrible tragedy. While driving home with his family from a youth hockey game, a large boulder dislodged from the canyon wall and struck their car, killing his wife and two sons-while leaving him inexplicably untouched. In one instant, Art's entire life crumbled, leaving him feeling utterly alone. As family, friends, and the entire Aspen community rushed in to offer comfort and support, Art faced what he imagined to be a bleak and lonely future. But what he found surprised him: the healing power of a stranger's grace.

That stranger was Allison, a twenty-eight-year-old Texan who had stopped in Aspen on her way to a new life. Allison was a woman struggling with her own grief following her older brother's suicide and the end of her marriage. When she heard of Art's tragedy, she felt compelled to reach out to him, a person whom she had never met but with whom she identified deeply. Art and Allison forged a close friendship, tending to each other's wounds and eventually falling in love and starting a family. And through it all, the living memory of Art's wife and sons guided and comforted them.

"Out of the Canyon" is the inspiring story of how two people found the courage to move on after profound heartbreak. Art and Allison teach us that it is not only possible to live through such turmoil, but to embrace life anew. And, with humility and understanding, they offer direct insight and advice on what truly helped them deal with irreversible change and how we can do the same.
