Books for Troops Program Continuing to Grow!

All of us at Arches Book Company and Back of Beyond Books would like to thank everyone who has helped us send books to the troops  in the Middle East. As of Friday, August 13, we have shipped 28 boxes of books, each with approximately 20 books inside, for an amazing 460 books. We have also raised close to $250 in donations for shipping costs.

We are now partnering with the National Guard in Blanding, UT, to send books to soldiers from the Moab, Blanding, and Monticello areas. We are still collecting paperback books, donations, and APO addresses.

Again, we appreciate everyone's help and support for this program. We hope it continues to bring some joy to the troops.

If you were part of Confluence last year, than you may have met or seen Jen Castle, one half of the duo from Boulder, UT, who run Hell's Backbone Grill, a seasonally-oriented, Buddhist-based restaurant located at the Boulder Mountain Lodge. Not only has the restaurant received national acclaim, but the cookbook has also received much attention from such notable sources as O Magazine, the New York Times, and Bill Jamison, award-winning cookbook author.

Please come and enjoy the stories behind this wonderful oasis in small-town, south-central Utah and taste some of their wonderful creations.

Jen and Blake will also be the chefs at the Youth Garden Project dinner August 31. Please contact the Youth Garden at 259-BEAN for more information.

Calvin Lee is our Featured Art Walk Artist for September

Who: Calvin Lee, artist
What: Moab Art Walk
When: Saturday, September 11, 2010, 6-9 PM
Where: Arches Book Company, 89 N. Main St.

"Why decorate life with ornaments when you can recreate it with art? Most representational and abstract art is the pretty stuff you can use to decorate your living room wall. Rather than just be pretty or technically proficient, I try to convey a thought or feeling - solitude, vastness, pilgrimage - through the expressive use of line, space, and color. I prefer to make the brush dance rather than be compulsive about detail. There is no perfect beauty without some weirdness in its proportion."

We are pleased to have Calvin as our featured artist in Arches Book Company this September. Originally from San Francisco, Calvin is the son of parents who immigrated from China at the age of 12. He grew up working in his parents grocery long before there were Safeways. He is self-taught as an artist, and his work has appeared at the Lucas Gallery in Telluride, the Metaphor Gallery in Aspen, the Flying Crane in Frisco, and the Loeb Gallery in Park City. Currently, his work is appearing at the Artist's Mercantile in Glenwood Springs and the Creator Mundi Gallery in Cherry Creek.

Meet Calvin Saturday night from 6 to 9 pm at Arches Book Company.
Sunday Jazz at Arches Book Company!

Live jazz is back at Arches Book Company Sunday mornings from 10 am to noon. Join Dave Steward and friends for a relaxing morning of music and camaraderie!

We invite you to tell us about books you love, what you're reading, or anything else regarding books. Fellow book lovers can read these comments in our e-newsletter, "The Biblio Files," displayed in our store, and on our website, backofbeyondbooks.com. Not only do we want to know what you're reading, but we also want to know where you're reading it. To "get caught reading," please take a photo of yourself reading with one of our bookmarks sticking out of your book. We will display your photo and location in our  newsletter, in our store, and on our website. Photos may be mailed or sent via e-mail to getcaught@backofbeyondbooks.com. Can't wait to catch you reading!
