Please join us for this special double-author event at Back of Beyond Books.

From the banks of China's Yangtze River, to the depths of Mexico's Copper Canyon, from the lofty summits of Colorado's highest peaks, to myriad dimly lit watering holes throughout the rural American West, Mountain Gazette Editor M. John Fayhee has spent his entire 30-year writing career telling stories about his off-beat journeys. At long last, Fayhee has compiled his favorite tales into one volume: "Bottoms Up: M. John Fayhee's Greatest Hits from the Mountain Gazette," scheduled to be released by Round Mountain Publishing in early June.

Of "Bottom's Up," Fayhee says: "What characteristics mark the pieces I have included in this book above and beyond the countless others I have penned? I think three interrelated and convoluted things. First, they are all 'stories' instead of 'articles,' and, while that may seem a mundane distinction to many, to a life-long spinner of yarns, the distinction is significant. Second, this book is defined by an honesty of expression sorely lacking in most nonfiction work these days. These are all stories penned sans handcuffs, straight jacket, or stylistic brainwashing of any kind. I like them because they are denotatively undiluted. No one tried to tell me what I wasn't allowed to say. Third, these stories come from and are mostly about my journeys in and around a part of the country I have called home for 34 years: the Mountain Time Zone. I am one of the world's single biggest screw ups. Yet, I have managed to pull off a lifestyle that has had me dwelling my entire adult life in the kinds of places people from lesser parts save up money all year just so they can come visit for two weeks."

B. Frank has done time as a: Colorado native, sawmill savage, fruit picker, artist, wanderer, poet, seasonal worker, commercial driver, photographer, traveling coffeehouse proprietor, outdoor guide, and writer. Among these endeavors, since 2005 he has been listed as a contributing editor and senior correspondent for Mountain Gazette, a magazine that sagely advises, "When in doubt, go higher."

Andy's Featured Rare Book Pick

The Hayden Atlas remains one of the high points from all the mapping done in the four major Western surveys (King, Powell, Wheeler, and Hayden). The atlas contains four preliminary maps of Colorado on a scale of 12 miles to 1 inch: a drainage map, a triangulation map, a general geographical map, and an economic map.

A second series of 12 maps were created on a scale of 4 miles to 1 inch. On the beautiful economic maps, colors represent land classifications including agricultural, pasture, pine forest, piņon pines and cedars, quaking aspen groves, and sage and bad lands. Symbols denote coal lands and gold and silver districts. Geologists still refer to these maps, marveling at their accuracy and beauty. William H. Holmes, who created the famous "View From Point Sublime" for the Tertiary History of the Grand Canyon prepared the lithographic sheets.

Hayden, F.V. Geological and Geographical Atlas of Colorado and Portions of Adjacent Territory. Julies Bien, Litho. 1881. 26" x 19 1/2", 20 double-page sheets maps, sections and panoramas; original brown gilt cloth binding. Minor staining to lower inside corner of front and back covers, interior unaffected. A near fine set of maps, bright and without foxing. Quite rare. Cost is $5,000.

Books for Troops

Now until September 1, Arches Book Company will be sending boxes of reading material to servicemen and women in Iraq and Afghanistan. Residents are invited to donate paperback books (gently used or new) or make a contribution to offset shipping costs. It costs 12.50 to ship approximately 15 paperbacks.

We are especially seeking APO addresses for local servicemen and women stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan. If you have a friend or relative whose company would appreciate a shipment of books, please give us the address and we will send off a box!

Book and monetary donations can be left with a bookseller during normal business hours, and addresses can be emailed to beth@backofbeyondbooks.com. Thank you for helping us support our troops!
Children's Hour Coming to Back of Beyond Books!
