The Tree

"How can I do what you say," asked the child, "and still be me?"
"Look at me," said the tree. "I bend in the wind, droop in the rain.  Yet I always remain myself, a tree."

"Look at me," said the man.  "I can't change."
"Look at me," said the tree. "I change every season from green to brown to green again, from bud to flower to fallen leaf.  Yet I always remain myself, a tree."

"I can't love anymore," said the woman.  "With my love, I have given away all that I am."
"Look at me," said the tree.  "There are robins in my branches, owls in my trunk moss and ladybugs living on my bark.  They may take what I have, but not what I am."

Whether we know it or not, we are like the tree.  Only our pride hangs on to a false sense of self, wanting to keep everything, resisting guidance or spiritual direction.

What we do doesn't matter; how we do it is what counts.  Change and growth are as natural as the sun coming up every morning and the setting of it every night.  Go with what is inside of you and listen to what your heart tells you.

Why not, if even for just today, reach out once more to a place that exists deep within yourself - a place without fear or judgment for yourself or for others . . . just once more.

Will My Spiritual Teacher
Please Stand Up?
Beth Prins Leas

blossom in hand
As we travel along that path referred to as spiritual enlightenment, we find ourselves seeking that omni-potent spiritual teacher - that one person who will teach us everything we ever needed to know about spirituality.  After all, haven't we all heard 'when the student is ready, the teacher will appear'?

Do you find yourself repeating this mantra?  "Teacher, teacher - where for art thou?"

Well, chant no more!  There is good news for you.  Your spiritual teachers have reported for duty.  They have always been there.

crowdA teacher is an individual, an event or an activity that is able to connect with the student and empower them with information.  Your spiritual teachers are everywhere.  They are the seemingly overheard bit of a conversation that makes you go buy a book to discover what everyone at the grocery store is talking about.  They are the children we bear and the children we were.  They are our parents, our friends, our pets, and our mechanics.  Each person or event we encounter is a spiritual teacher.  Every book, magazine or article we read is a teacher.  Each movie, television show or radio show we see or listen to is our teacher.

"Oh," I hear you say.  "I mean my TEACHER."  Okay.  I am with you now.  You mean that one person who will teach you everything you ever needed to know about spirituality.  I have bad news for you.  There is not just one teacher.

Along your life's path you will encounter many teachers.  You will jump from one stepping stone of knowledge to another as you try to keep you feet from getting wet in the stream of spirituality that courses through our society.  You will be interested in myriad subjects and try on many different books and courses.

Here are some simple guidelines to help you with your journey to finding those teachers who are currently offering classes.

  • Spiritual Teachers empower you, they do not control you.
  • They are willing to listen as much as talk.
  • They encourage your natural curiosity to learn without forcing.
  • They promote laughter and joy, not fear.
  • They share in your journey and honor your confidence.
  • They encourage you to take other courses from other teachers and to take wing and fly off into the world of experience.
  • They have a set fee - without hidden charges.
  • They encourage personal input from you and invite individual questions and opinions.
  • They enhance your journey.
Spirit Guides as Teachers
Many spiritual teachers today quote from their own spirit guides and of course we each have our own spirit guides who are our teachers.  One of the most common mistakes encountered today is to blindly believe everything that is presented because it comes from a seemingly 'higher' source of power.

Challenge your own guidance, as they do not mind a challenge.  Be aware of the messages that stress your own importance, your own brilliance or give you orders.

Also be aware of the messages that list your faults.  True guidance is a gentle, loving force that guides and inspires.  It does not berate or bully.

Always use your own intuition, for that is the gift of knowledge given to you by the creator.  As you chant that famous mantra "Teacher, teacher, where for art thou?", take time to glance in the mirror to see the true answer to your question - YOU!

Blessings on your path -
