Here we are already in the middle of summer, warm days, lush greens, vacationers coming and going. Many try to hold onto these beautiful days, dread the coming of fall. Others feel hungry to find something special as this time of freedom and openness rolls along. There are so many expectations we all hold onto about what will and will not make us content. Yet there is another way to greet the summer. A way that makes us happy and complete, no matter what. As we practice the little lessons in this ezine, all the days of our seasons can turn around.

The Practice of Hope

water lillies It's one thing to say, "Be hopeful, look to the bright side, there's reason to feel good, no matter how dark things seem. It's quite another to develop the unique and rare capacity to truly live each day in a positive, uplifted state of mind, no matter what 's going on - and to be a source of hope for others. This takes practice. True hope is not a fleeting feeling, which comes and goes, it cannot be pasted over feelings of anxiety and sorrow.

In order to attain a truly hopeful state of being, and for it to be solid and dependable, we must also be able to face the disappointment and darkness that comes, see what they really are, and why they have such power over us. Rather than hide from what is unpleasant, it is important to see the truth of that which is presented to you and stay planted in that which is real and beneficial.

Most so-called problems are simply mirages, which will pass on their own, if allowed to. Difficulty passes easily, when we see it for what it is and do not compound it with complicated schemes and ideas. Dark times can be taken as a thunderstorm on a summer night, that arises and passes as quickly as it came. There is no need to hide from or fear the thunder and lightening. There is also beauty and power they bring with them. As we learn to openly encounter all kinds of situations and accept all parts of ourselves, true balance and hopefulness arises, like a lotus popping up out of the soil.

There's a beautiful poem that says, "The precious jewel we have lost, some say it is to the East of us, others to the West." (Rumi). This precious jewel is an enduring sense of well being and hope. But how have we lost it, and where can it be found? Most of us spend our lives searching to the East and West, looking outside ourselves for that which will bring this treasure to us, that which will take us home.

However, as we embark upon the Practice of Hope, we soon learn that this precious jewel is planted within. We have simply to stop our usual ways of living, sit down, turn around, look within, and make acquaintance with all that we are and all that we are not. As we grow in courage to face the truth of the moment, we see there is nothing that can harm us. Moments of darkness arise and pass, as do moments of joy. Watching the nature of our fleeting feelings, we inevitably become acquainted with that which does not come or go. In this way we open our own treasure house and discover our endless source of hope and joy.

Sounds as though you are involved with what psychologists call, the repetition compulsion. This is the compulsion to repeat old, painful, traumatic relationships again and again. We do this in order to heal the relationship, to make it turn out differently this time. Of course it doesn't, and each time can be more painful..

Rather than seek one relationship after another, take some time out to understand where this pattern comes from, what it is you need to heal, what happened and why you can't let it go. The way to change this kind of situation is through understanding, recognition and the willingness to make new choices and find new ways of healing old wounds.
