Early Fall 2012
Letter from the Executive Director

Summer acupressure point

Dear Friends,

You all are tremendous supporters of our work as one of the largest non-profit providers of free and low cost holistic health services in the nation. With your help Pathways provided over 10,000 free and low cost holistic services (acupuncture, massage, Chinese herbal medicine) in fiscal year 2012, a unique resource for the greater Boston community.

I'd like to share some exciting news: We have an incredible opportunity to relocate just a block away, at 35 W. Newton Street, on the corner of W. Newton and Washington Street. This location is going to allow us to grow our market rate business which supports our mission through a retail type of store front. The lease is long term --10 years with two additional five-year options, allowing us to stay put for 20 years.

Why move at all? The South End Community Health Center, our landlord for the past six years, is growing and unable to renew our lease, but wants to continue our partnership.

Pathways Online Auction is a Big Success!

Thanks to all of our item donors, bidders, and volunteers for participating in our first online auction. Your efforts played a big part in the auction's success.

With your help we raised over $9,000 for Pathways' free and low-cost holistic care programs for people with HIV/AIDS, military veterans, and others without resources. We couldn't have done it without you--thanks so much!

Client Satisfaction Survey

Pathways cares about your experience as a client.

Our bi-annual client survey will be distributed in September and October to all clients receiving care, and results will be compiled, analyzed and reported in our Winter newsletter.

Please look for the survey in your email or pick up a copy at our front desk. Your feedback is important to us!

Pathways Research Director Goes to Washington

Beth Sommers, LAc, Research Director

This past June, Pathways Research Director Beth Sommers, L.Ac., Ph.D. was invited to Washington, DC by the Integrated Health Care Policy Consortium (IHPC) as part of a group which briefed members of the House and Senate, as well as talked with representatives from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), about how integrative medicine is being practiced in community health settings.

Pathways continues to be recognized as a national model of how acupuncture, massage, and Chinese herbal medicine can be provided in a public health environment.

Beth has also been recognized by the Massachusetts Human Service Providers Council with their Gerry Wright Direct Service Employee Award for her exemplary commitment to the human services industry.

The Gerry Wright Direct Service Employee Award is given to direct service employees who provide essential support, services, and above all, care to individuals with varying needs. The award is given to a direct service employee to fully recognize outstanding dedication.

Beth will be honored along with other winners of the Awards for Excellence at the 37th Annual Provider's Council Convention on November 28th.

Another Acupuncture House Party Success!

Many thanks to Jennifer Mason for hosting a delicious and relaxing Acupuncture House Party in Dorchester over the summer. Guests relaxed with demonstration acupuncture treatments provided by Beth Sommers, L.Ac., while dining on delicious hors d'ouerves provided by Jennifer and her spouse. Pathways Executive Director, Demie Stathoplos, shared a brief presentation on the mission and programs of the organization, and military veteran and Pathways client Joel P. shared the benefits he has experienced from his care at Pathways.

Acupuncture house parties are a fun and innovative way to introduce your friends and colleagues to the programs that Pathways to Wellness offers in the community, while allowing them to experience the benefits of holistic care for themselves.

If you are interested in hosting an acupuncture house party, contact Demie Stathoplos at dstathoplos@pathwaysboston.org or call 617-859-3036, x270.

Transitions

This seems to be the season of change for us.

We said farewell to Jim Liebke, Program Manager at the end of May when he was recruited for a position at Vinfen to start a program for head injury survivors, his area of expertise. Jim remains a part time home care massage therapist with us.

Jessica Green joined us as Program Manager and has come on board with strong management experience from opening and running a Pita Pit restaurant in Brookline and volunteering at Network LaRed. She has tremendous energy and enthusiasm for our mission. In three short months she has helped us get our satellite site up and running at Tufts Cancer Infusion Center, where we are providing acupuncture and massage therapy to patients receiving chemotherapy.

Jenn Mason, our Clinical Operations Manager departed at the end of August and Keku'i Ledward will be departing at the end of September. Both will be sorely missed by staff and clients alike. Amanda Hart, new to Boston from Pittsburgh, has recently joined us as Clinic Coordinator. She has strong office administration skills and is a welcome addition to the Pathways family.

Thank You New England School of Acupuncture and Pathways Volunteers

The New England School of Acupuncture (NESA) has been a long time supporter of Pathways. It was NESA graduates who started the AIDS Care Project as volunteers, and helped found the organization back in 1989. Today, NESA students and teachers provide acupuncture and Chinese herbal consults and prescriptions to Pathways clients at low cost, or in the case of military veterans, for free.

Three clinical supervisors from NESA have overseen the work of students at Pathways this year, and are responsible for the high quality of work done by the students under their supervision. They are John Colville, C.J. Allen, and Winnie Chow. Pathways sends a huge THANK YOU, and warm appreciation for the support these talented clinicians provide.

Pathways has been very fortunate to benefit from the volunteer efforts of many professionals in our community. Special thanks this season go to:

Bryan Furze for assisting in the negotiation of the lease at 35 W. Newton St.

Chad Lundeen for volunteering professional construction project management services for our new site

Ilene Perlman for donating professional photography services to document the work of our clinicians

Justin Kennard and Mary Ferrise for designing the look and copy of print ads for Pathways

Mari McKeon for consulting services to help us develop our building fund drive case for support

Linda Markarian for managing our web site

Michele Mittelman for donating complimentary ad space in the September issue of Global Advances in Health and Medicine
